South Africa Deports 97 Nigerians For Crime, Others

The South African Government has deported 97 Nigerians for committing various offences in the country. The deported Nigerians landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos last night in a chartered aircraft with the registration number GBB710 from Johannesburg.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that they were made up of 95 males and two females.

Joseph Alabi, the spokesperson of the Lagos Airport Police Command, confirmed the development. An immigration source told NAN on condition of anonymity that six of the deportees were returned to the country for drug offences while 10 were arrested and deported for other criminal offences. The others were said to have committed immigration offences.
All the deportees were profiled by officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) while those deported for drug related offences were handed over to the Police for further investigation.

Sheriff Behaved Like A Gangster – Kwara PDP

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Mr. Sunday Fagbemi on Tuesday said the factional National Chairman of PDP, Senator Ali Modu Sherriff behaved like a gangster by breaking into the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja to take over the secretariat.

Fagbemi said Sheriff should have approached the custodian of the party’s property, the Board of Trustees, to comply with the judgement of the Court of Appeal.

He spoke during an extra-ordinary meeting of the party in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.


Fagbemi accused Sherrif of being a willing tool in the hands of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

He said, “We see and know Sherrif as agent provocateur, working in tandem with the APC, as his relationship with President Mohammed Buhari as a loyal in-law is well known to all Nigerians.

Sherriff had demonstrated his lack of capacity and capability to lead a virile party like the PDP.

He said, “We saw the temporary ‘victory’ of Sheriff as a travesty of Justice and victory for APC, which is interested in the destruction and decimation of opposition parties in Nigeria, particularly the PDP.”

Fagbemi stated that state faction of PDP was in total agreement with the decisions at the meeting of the stakeholders on February 20 at Ekiti House, Asokoro, Abuja following the judgement of the Court of Appeal on February 17.

He expressed support for the appeal to the Supreme Court of Nigeria by the Ahmed Makarfi national faction and filling of an application for stay of execution pending the final determination of the appeal.

He called on the federal government to desist from allegedly persecuting the leaders of the party in the state, under the guise of fighting corruption.

He urged member of the party in the state to be fully prepared and ready to respond positively anytime the Kwara State Government makes pronouncements on the LG elections.

He added that the PDP will definitely partake in the LG elections.

Teenager Stabs Colleague With Broken Bottle

A teenager, Olusola Osunde, 18, is facing trial in an Okitipupa Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State for allegedly stabbing one Wale Koleosho with a broken bottle.

The accused, a student of no fixed address, is standing trial on a one-count charge of assault.The Prosecutor, Insp. Zedekiah Orogbemi, alleged that the accused and one other at large had a misunderstanding with the victim leading to him being stabbed.

The incident was said to have occurred along Okitipupa-Igbokoda road on Jan. 30 at about 8:00 p.m.


Orogbemi told the court that the broken bottle caused severe injuries and bodily harm to the victim.

He added that the offence was contrary to and punishable under Section 355, Criminal Code Cap.37, Vol.1, Laws of Ondo State 2006.

The Magistrate, Mr Banji Ayeomoni, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with a surety in like sum.

He added that the surety must present a year tax clearance.

Ayeomoni, subsequently, adjourned the case till March 7 for further hearing.

105 Passengers Escape Death Again As Medview Airline Plane Develops Fault Midair

A Medview Airline flight from Lagos to Abuja was suspended midair after a fault was observed on the plane.

A passenger on the flight said passengers suspected the plane, with flight number VL 2102, was faulty before takeoff, but they were assured by the pilot and the crew that all was well.

A few minutes after take-off, the plane had to return to the Lagos Airport due to the problem.


“They want to kill over 100 passengers with their faulty plane” a passenger said.

The plane was scheduled to get to Abuja before a final journey to Yola, Adamawa State.

The Medview incident happened a day after a Boeing 737 aircraft belonging to Air Peace on Monday suffered a burst tyre while preparing for take-off at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.

The incident occurred at about 11a.m. forcing the pilot to abort the flight.

The aircraft was to convey 105 passengers from Lagos to Abuja.

Senior Adviser To Thailand King Sacked In Latest Purge

A senior adviser to Thailand's new monarch has been sacked, authorities said Tuesday, the second aide to King Maha Vajiralongkorn to be publicly purged in recent weeks.

Vajiralongkorn, 64, took the throne following the October death of his widely revered father King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who reigned for seven decades.He has yet to attain his father's widespread popularity.

In recent years a growing list of people in his inner circle have been fired or jailed, including two who later died in military custody.

The latest palace official to fall from grace is Jumpol Manmai, a former deputy police commissioner and palace Grand Chamberlain.

In a statement the Royal Household Bureau said Jumpol was fired for trying to improperly profit from his royal links and make political connections.

"General Jumpol committed inappropriate behaviour as a senior official close to the King," the palace order, countersigned by junta chief Prayut Chan-O-Cha, said.

"He abused his position to gain personal and political benefits which jeopardises security," it added, without giving further details.

The fates of fallen royal aides are closely watched and widely gossipped upon by Thais.

That is because the royal family is protected by a draconian defamation law that makes scrutiny of its inner workings, or debate over its role, almost impossible inside the kingdom.

Media inside Thailand must heavily self-censor when reporting on the royal family.

Last week another senior aide to the king, Air Vice Marshal Chitpong Thongkum, was sacked on the charge of improperly profiting from the family.

In 2015 three people -- including a celebrity soothsayer -- were arrested under the lese majeste law for trying to profit from their royal connections.

The soothsayer and one other suspect died in military custody soon after their arrests.

The year before, Vajiralongkorn announced that his then wife Princess Srirasmi Suwadee, with whom he has a son, had been stripped of her titles.

That came after half a dozen members of Srirasmi's family were jailed on lese majeste charges for allegedly improperly using their connections to him.

Recovered Loot Intact, Says Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has stated that money recovered from corrupt persons by the Federal Government is intact.

Mohammed said the recovered funds would be used for infrastructural and social development, adding that the Federal Government had set up an asset recovery committee to ensure that the money recovered from individuals and organisations were returned to the Ministry of Finance.

The minister, who spoke in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, on Monday during a town hall meeting with and the inaugutration of ‘The change begins with me campaign,’ pointed out that the recent whistle-blower policy introduced by the Federal Government had facilitated looted funds recovery.


He assured Nigerians that nobody could loot any money recovered from looters under the watch of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said government was committed to keeping its promise that certain percentage of any money recovered would go to the person that supplied the information that would lead to the recovery of stolen money.

The minister blamed the high cost of commodities in the country on corruption, pointing out that there was no economy that would experience the level of looting in Nigeria without having prices of goods and services shoot up.

He said, “If one person was found with almost $10m in an uncompleted building, another one was found with $136m in a fake account and another one was also found with N7bn, all this through the whistle-blower policy, and money that were meant for infrastructural development and services; that is why you cannot do anything about the economy without fighting corruption.”

On the state of President’s health, Mohammed insisted that Buhari was not sick but on vacation.

He said, “The President called me at exactly 2.43pm on Saturday, if he is in the hospital, as the Minister of Information I will do a news bulletin on that but he is not critically sick nor is he in the hospital, there is absolutely no cause for alarm.”

Ministers that accompanied Mohammed to the meeting were the Minister for Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige; the Minister for Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh; the Minister for Industry, Trade and Investment, Okechukwu Enelamah; and the Minister of State for Mines and Steel, Abubarkar Bwari.

One of the daughters of President Muhammadu Buhari, Hadiza, has visited him in London.

President Buhari has been in the United Kingdom since January on an extended medical vacation.

Rapper Meek Mill forced an elderly homeless man to do push-ups for money. Mill and his entourage were filmed 'taunting' the man in a series of sickening videos after he approached them on Friday night.

Meek told the man: “Give me 10 pushups and I’m going to give you $20 right now.

“We ain’t giving out no free money. Go ahead."The rapper’s crew then doubled the number of push-ups - and the elderly man drops to the floor.

The video does not show if he received any money or not.

Mill has faced a furious backlash after the incident came out in a series of videos posted to his Instagram Story that night.

Twitter users slammed Meek’s behaviour in the since-deleted videos as “a disgrace” and “f***ing gross."

Although some people backed the rapper, arguing that the homeless man was earning the equivalent of $1,200 an hour.

Dorindaletitbe wrote: "Shame on you for what you made the homeless man do for a double.

"You are in a better place than he and you should do better man."

Plotting wrote: "Meek Mill forgot where he came from, he lost me and my respect when I seen him make that homeless man do push ups for $20."

Fire Guts Banky W’s Lekki Home

A property located along Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos where popular singer, Banky W, lives has been destroyed by fire.

A neighbour to the artiste told our correspondent on the telephone that the fire was caused by a faulty air conditioner.

The fire was believed to have started around 6am.A resident said, “The fire started around 6am and all of us came out to assist Banky in putting out the fire.


“However,  Fire service officials arrived around 7.30am.

“So many items were destroyed including Banky’s awards. But officials of the fire service arrived over an hour late.”

Photo: Police In El Salvador Investigating Brutal Attack On Hippopotamus

Police in El Salvador are investigating a "cowardly and inhumane" attack at the National Zoological Park that killed a hippopotamus named Gustavito.

The 15-year-old hippo suffered "multiple blows on different parts of the body" from "blunt and sharp objects" in Wednesday's attack, the Ministry of Culture said in a statement.

The San Salvador zoo said veterinarians had been caring for the animal around the clock since discovering that he had been attacked. Despite their efforts, he died Sunday. The zoo plans to perform a necropsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Staff had noticed on Thursday that the hippo was displaying unusual behavior -- spending most of the day under water in his enclosure. He also had stopped eating.

The statement from the ministry said that during an examination veterinarians noticed he was suffering from "bruises, lacerations on the head and body, cramps and abdominal pain."

Zoo director Vladen Henríquez said Gustavito also had injuries to his feet and wounds on his cheek that could have been caused by an ice pick.

"There were injuries inside his mouth," Henríquez said, adding that they were probably inflicted "when the animal tried to defend himself."

Officials said they found pieces of metal and rocks inside the hippo's enclosure.

One of the zoo's main attractions, Gustavito had been in El Salvador for more than 12 years after being bought from Guatemala. As a result of the attack, authorities have doubled the security at the zoo.

German Beheaded In Philippines By Militants After Deadline To Pay Ransom Passed

A German man has been beheaded by Abu Sayyaf militants in the southern Philippines after a deadline to pay his ransom passed.

Philippine and German officials confirmed that 70-year-old Jurgen Kantner had been killed after being held for three months by the Islamist militant group.

It was the second time Kantner, 70, had been abducted. He was held along with his partner, Sabine Merz, by Somali pirates for nearly two months in 2008.

Abu Sayyaf posted a gruesome video of its militants killing the man with a curved knife. The video was distributed by the SITE Intelligence Group.

"The Federal Chancellor condemns the abominable act, which once again shows how unscrupulous and inhumane these terrorists are. We all must stand together and fight against them," German Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert said.

Ibadan Court Orders DNA Test Conducted On 3-Year Old To Determine His Father

An Idi-Ogungun Customary Court in Agodi, Ibadan, yesterday, ordered a DNA test to be conducted to determine the biological father of a three-year-old boy.

The President of the court, Chief Mukaila Balogun, gave the order when the mother of the child, Monsurat Adeleke, and her estranged lover, Bayo Ogunsola, could not convince the court on the boy’s paternity.

Balogun directed that the two parties share the cost of the DNA test and return to the court on March 27 with the result. The mother of the child had disagreed with her erstwhile lover over who the real father of the child was.

Monsurat had on February 14 approached the court, seeking an order to restrain Bayo from parading himself as the biological father of her son, saying she was six months pregnant for her husband before she met him in a hotel.

She said the respondent cast a spell on her, which made her leave her matrimonial home to live with him. She claimed she was under the spell for three years, adding that it was during that time that she gave birth to the boy, adding that she left for her matrimonial home recently when the spell was broken.

Bayo, in his defence, insisted that the complainant conceived and gave birth to the child in his house. He said he met Monsurat in a hotel owned by his brother and they both lived together after she ceased going to the hotel with other men. He insisted that Monsurat conceived and gave birth to the boy while they were living together until she recently packed out of his house and returned to her former husband.
