Hajiya Ali left behind her husband, Hameed Ali, and four children.

Dozens killed in Burkina Faso market massacre

Gunmen killed at least 25 people in an attack on a market in eastern Burkina Faso, the local governor said on Sunday, a day after an attack in the north claimed 15 lives.

Local residents say the gunmen on motorbikes killed around 30 people in Saturday’s attack on Kompienbiga livestock market near Pama, a raid the security forces blame on jihadists.

Colonel Saidou Sanou, the governor of Est province, issued a statement Sunday.

“A group of terrorists attacked the market at Kompienbiga…,” he said, putting the death toll at least 25, and several wounded.

This attack, the latest of many, underlined the need for the army and local people to work together to “defeat the terrorist hydra”, the statement added.

A local elected official spoke in terms of tens of dead and said they were mainly local residents and traders.

One resident told AFP the assailants “burst into the market riding motorbikes and started shooting, especially at people who were trying to flee”. This witness put the death toll at around 30.

A second resident said: “It’s hard to say how many people were killed. There were bodies in the market, and others in the bush.”

But he added: “More than 30 bodies were collected” after the attack. He said his brother was at the market at the time and he had had “no news” from him since.

The attack came a day after a convoy of mainly shopkeepers escorted by a local self-defence unit came under fire in the north of the West African country, leaving 15 dead. That attack, in Loroum province, was also blamed on jihadists.

The east and north of the former French colony are the hardest hit by attacks by jihadists, who have killed more than 900 people and caused some 860,000 people to flee their homes in the past five years.

Burkina Faso’s armed forces are leading counter-terror operations with increasing frequency.

The impoverished Sahel country is part of a regional effort to battle an Islamist insurgency along with Mali, Niger, Mauritania and Chad.

Their militaries, under-equipped and poorly trained, are struggling despite help from France, which has 5,000 troops in the region.

Unrest in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger killed around 4,000 people last year, according to UN figures.

Vera Omozuwa: UNIBEN reacts to alleged r.a.p.e of 100 level student in church

The management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has reacted to the alleged r.a.p.e of one of its students, Vera Uwaila Omozuwa.

It was learned that Uwaila, who was a 100-level Microbiology student of UNIBEN, was r.a.p.e.d and killed by some unknown person while reading in a Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, in Benin City.

The Vice-Chancellor of UNIBEN, Lilian Salami, in a statement through the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehanire, expressed shock over the news.

He described the action as condemnable, adding that inflicting such pain on any family in this era of COVID-19 pandemic is a wicked act.

While commiserating with the bereaved family on the loss of their daughter, Mrs Salami prayed God to grant her soul peaceful rest.

The Vice-Chancellor advised students of the institution to be careful of the company they keep and the places they visited.

He added that a delegation had been sent by the university’s management to commiserate with the bereaved family.

Policeman kills colleagues in shooting spree

A yet- to- be named policeman on Sunday morning allegedly opened fire on his colleagues at Onikan, killing some of them.

The yet- to- be named officer went berserk around 5am following a disagreement with other members of his team.

It was gathered that the trigger- happy cop hijacked their operational vehicle after shooting them and drove straight to Akoka in Yaba around 5am where he attempted to access a compound but couldn’t.

According to sources, the building had a metallic door and the policeman said to be attached to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) allegedly opened sporadic fire on the property to gain access.

Residents said they were frightened and took cover not knowing what was happening since it was around 5am.

The Nation gathered that no fewer than 30 bullet holes were counted in an apartment, corridor and ceiling of the premises.

It was learnt that the shooter, who spotted black outfit and rose in a white escort van with siren, might have become more frustrated after his vehicle stock in a ditch when he made to escape.

Sources said distress calls were made to the Bariga Police Division and the Rapif Response Squad (RRS) who deployed operatives to the scene and restrained the acrive shooter.

From short videos obtained by The Nation from residents, the trigger happy cop was screaming incoherent, a development suggestive of a possible mental illness.

He was heard alleging that some persons wanted to corrupt him and that he should be allowed to go home in the name of Jesus.

At the time of this report, police spokesman Bala Elkana told our correspondent that the command was investigating the matter to understand what truly happened, adding that a statement would be released later.

Man United to extend Ighalo’s loan until January 2021

Manchester United are close to agreeing to a loan extension for former Nigerian striker, Odion Ighalo, until January 2021, the striker’s loan deal expires today (Sunday).

Giving an update on the loan extension Sunday morning, Skysports reports that “the proposed loan extension will run until the end of January, when Ighalo will return to Shanghai.

“If agreed, Ighalo will miss the majority of the 2020 Chinese Super League season, which is scheduled to begin in June.

“Shanghai’s original stance was that they would only agree to extend his loan if an obligation to buy was incorporated into the deal, with Ighalo likely to cost upwards of £20m.”

Also, his agent, Ladi Salami, said salary agreement is being finalised.

Ighalo’s current contract expires in December 2022, but Shanghai want to keep him until at least December 2024, Skysports reports.

According to reports, United is contributing £130,000-a-week towards the former Watford striker’s wages.

While awaiting a contract extension at United, the Nigerian player has reportedly been offered a deal worth £400,000-a-week by Shanghai Shenhua.

Since joining his childhood club on loan in January, Ighalo has scored four goals in eight appearances in all competitions.

Robbers raid Man City’s Mahrez apartment, steal £500,000 valuables

Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez had three luxury watches worth more than £300,000 ($370,000) stolen when thieves raided his penthouse apartment, according to British media reports on Sunday.

More than £50,000 in cash along with Cartier bracelets and rare football shirts worth up to £150,000 were also taken from the Algeria international.

The watches were reported to be a £230,000 Richard Mille timepiece, a £40,000 Rolex Daytona and a £35,000 Rolex Day Date.

Mahrez, 29, was said to not have been at home when the offenders used a key fob to access his apartment and three others in the Manchester city centre block on April 24.

The Sun quoted a letter sent to residents which read: “Four apartments were accessed without authority using a fob which had general access throughout the building.

“The fob in question is now in our possession, has been fully deactivated and cannot be used again.”

The robbery continued an alarming sequence of Premier League stars being targeted by thieves.

Earlier this month, Tottenham and England midfielder Dele Alli spoke of the “horrible experience” of being punched by armed raiders who stole watches and jewellery from his London home.

Alli was ordered to hand over valuables to the raiders during the early hours attack as he played pool with his brother and his model girlfriend Ruby Mae.

The two knife-wielding masked intruders then fled from his home in leafy Hadley Wood.

In March, the family of Alli’s Tottenham team-mate Jan Vertonghen was robbed at knifepoint while he was away on Champions League duty.

N.u.d.e photos: 19-year-old plotting to blackmail Salawa Abeni arrested

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Lagos State Police Command, have arrested a 19-year-old National Diploma holder of the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, for plotting to blackmail popular artiste, Salawa Abeni.

The suspect, Olufowoke Emmanuel, said to be a resident of Ogun State, was picked up by the decoy team of the RRS last Thursday.

The police were said to have been trailing Emmanuel for three days.

The artiste recently went on social media to raise the alarm over plans to blackmail her with her nude photos.

She posted her WhatsApp conversation with the suspect and the purported old photos he planned to use for the blackmail.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Hakeem Odumosu, was said to have in April 2020, directed the Commander, RRS, DCP Olatunji Disu, to fish out the blackmailer.

After the technical diagnosis of the complaint, the decoy team was said to have narrowed down on him.

The police said Emmanuel could not be picked immediately because of the prevalence of the COVID-19, adding that he was later arrested.

The suspect, in his statement to the police, allegedly confessed to the crime, saying he wanted to extort money from the artiste.

The Electrical Engineering graduate, reportedly said he saw the nude pictures in a memory card he picked up on the floor in YABATECH in November 2019.

He added that after downloading the photographs on his phone, he got Abeni’s mobile number from her Instagram page.

“On 1st of April, 2020, I chatted her up and also called her after sending a few of the photos to her online.

“My intention was to negotiate with her for a few bucks and for me to destroy the photographs.

“I thought everything was going on fine until the following day when I heard the news of the blackmail over the radio.

“I was with my mother. She even cursed the blackmailer unknown to her that I was the one behind it.

“I immediately sneaked out, destroyed the memory card, and threw my mobile phone and SIM card into a nearby wetland in Magboro.

“Since then, I never mentioned it to anyone and called Madam Salawa Abeni about it again,” he said.

The Lagos CP, Odumosu, said no individual would be allowed to commit a crime in Lagos from any state or escape to other states in Nigeria to evade arrest.

He advised parents to monitor their children, emphasising that the Internet was a fertile ground for opportunities but the command would not allow criminals to use it to exploit law-abiding residents.

FG begins 2020 systematic maintenance of all Lagos bridges, drains evacuation

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr Kayode Popoola, on Sunday said the government had begun “systematic maintenance of all bridges in Lagos’’ to ensure smooth rides and safety.

Popoola told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the telephone that government had a schedule to fix all bridges in Lagos State in batches this year as funds were made available.

“We have plans for maintenance of all bridges in Lagos state this year, our prayer is that the COVID-19 pandemic should come to an end so that we can swing into action.

“There is going to be systematic maintenance, we will change the rubbers of the expansion joints and anyone that the metal is bad.

“We are going to replace bearings on expansion joints that are worn out, that is the systematic programme that we have this year.

“We say systematic because we cannot take all the bridges at once; for instance, we are to maintain Third Mainland Bridge, Marine Beach Bridge, Eko Bridge, Ijora 7Up Bridge, so, we are taking them one after another, ’’ he said.

He explained that funding and traffic congestion were some of the reasons why the bridges could not be shut for repairs at the same time.

“We want to schedule the maintenance,’’ he said.

He explained that contracts for repairs of the Third Mainland, Ijora 7Up and Marine Beach Bridges had been awarded while that of Eko Bridge was undergoing procurement for the award.

Speaking on the Marine Beach Bridge in Apapa which was supposed to be closed for repairs, Popoola said that the closure for rehabilitation was still being delayed because of rainfall.

He explained that the rains was slowing down ongoing patching of all adjoining roads to the bridge to avert gridlock, adding that, repair works were being washed off by the flood.

“We will complete the repairs and close the bridge anytime this week to begin work on it, I cannot tell you if it is Monday or Tuesday but I am sure it will be this week.

“We have to ensure the adjoining roads are in good condition to take traffic before we close any part of the bridge,’’ he said.

Popoola explained that drains on highways and bridges were also being cleaned to avert flooding.

“The cleaning of weep holes on Long Bridge (Lagos-Ibadan Expressway) is ongoing. Desilting of weep holes is a regular thing, that is, we open them up and clean if not, they will have all been silted up by now, silted up means that they will have been blocked by sand.

“We are also removing garbage from manholes so that all our drainages will function very well.

“We are currently cleaning manholes on Apapa-Oshodi-Oworonshoki Road, Globatek (contractor) is working on it to address major problems of flooding on that road,’’ he said.

The controller appealed to Lagos residents to stop indiscriminate disposal of refuse in drains and open manholes to avert flooding.

“Lagosians should please stop dropping garbage inside the manholes. When you go there you will see used tyres, planks and all manners of rubbish. It will be difficult for floodwaters to pass through to go into the canals.

“Manhole is not meant to collect garbage, people should not drop refuse in gutters and all drainage paths to allow free flow of water,’’ he said.

He lamented that vandals were stealing manhole covers but that plans were on to replace the covers with concrete that could not be easily removed.

Kogi state government accuses NCDC of unethical practice, says agency violates own protocol to nail state

The Kogi state government has said that the Nigeria center for Disease Control, (NCDC) in its desperation to record a Covid-19 case against the state violated its own guidelines and protocol for declaring a case.

In a statement by Dr Saka Haruna Audu, Commissioner for Health Kogi State, on Sunday in Lokoja, said even when they claimed that the patient was COVID-19 positive, the patient was yet to be taken to an isolation center till date.

The commissioner who was reacting to last week declaration of two COVID-19 cases against the state, noted that the patient’s son who was also purported to be positive was asked to go home and has remained with his father in the hospital running errands going even as far as Suleja, in Niger State, asking “Who are we fooling?

His words “One needs not to dig deeper to see the handwriting clearly written on the wall at how desperate NCDC is to nail Kogi State with a Covid-19 case and there is no telling how low they are willing to stoop to do so.

“They claim the patient was positive but hasn’t been taken to an Isolation centre. As at this moment, he is still in the National Hospital.

“His son who was also purported to be positive was asked to go home! He remained with his father in the Hospital running errands going even as far as Suleja, in Niger State. Who are we fooling?

“It should be mentioned also that the patient’s relation initially cried out to us to help evacuate them from the National Hospital but on arriving there to evacuate them, and conduct a confirmatory test using a private molecular laboratory as well as Kogi State Rapid test kits, the patient eventually denied us the opportunity to get it done, siting fear of receiving punishment from the Federal Government (NCDC). Being able to carry out this independent verification will have put to rest this matter once and for all.

“We also wish to categorically state that though NCDC has consistently refused to support Kogi State in her fight against Covid-19, WHO had been part of our team till date. Though NCDC refused to follow their own protocols on visiting the State, WHO staff who travelled out of our State and returned have always obeyed the rule of self-isolation for 14 days.

“Despite the fact that we do not accept the fictitious cases, we have gone ahead to do contact tracing to identify all those who came in contact with them, tested them and they all came back negative. They will be retested in the next 14 days post the first contact.

Gunmen shoot APC chairman dead in Katsina LGA

Gunmen suspected to be bandits have shot and killed the All Progressive Congress (APC) chairman of Batsari council area of Katsina state, Alhaji Abdulhamid Mamman.

Mammam was killed on Sunday afternoon, at about 2:45pm, after the gunmen besieged Sabon Garin Dunburawa village, where he hailed from.

Gunmen entered his home with the intention of abducting him and some of his family members, action of which he resisted.

A source said it was while the deceased was showing resistance that the gunmen shot and killed him.

His body, it was learnt, has been deposited at the General Hospital in Batsari, with sources saying he might be buried later on Sunday evening.

The state has seen recent upsurge in activities of bandits, especially in councils areas sharing border with the dreaded Rugu forest.

About 14 council areas had in recent months, witnessed activities of gunmen, most of whom are suspected to be bandits.

The bandits’ mode of operation is to kill, maim and abduct hapless residents for ransom, rape women, rustle domestic animals and cause other evil havocks, including setting food stores and villages ablaze.

Some two days ago, bandits had attacked close to a down villages in Sabuwa and Faksari council areas, where they reportedly killed over a dozen people.

In one of the villages, they raped a woman and poured battery acid on her private part, with the woman said to battling for her life in the hospital.

Following the upsurge in activities of bandits, President Muhammadu Buhari had a couple of weeks ago, ordered a coordinated security operation to flush out the bandits.

Governor Aminu Masari, who days back lemented the operation of bandits in parts of the state, said some communities were more concerrned about the issue than they were about coronavirus.

However, spokesman for the police command in the state, SP Gambo Isah is yet to respond to inquiries on the issue as at time of this report

Our breadwinner is gone, where do we start from –Mum, wife of Dubai-returnee who died in Lagos isolation centre

Grief overwhelmed Mrs Kehinde Kolawole as she spoke with Sunday Punch about her son, Tunde Kolawole, who died few days after his return from the United Arab Emirates while observing a 14-day supervised quarantine at a Lagos facility with other returnees.

The Federal Government previously mandated evacuated Nigerians to subject themselves for 14-quarantine in its bid to curb the coronavirus pandemic.

The deceased’s mother who’s into farming with her husband said her late son returned home to seek medical attention after he took ill in Dubai, the UAE capital.

She said, “We plant crops such as maize, corn and others. I trained my two children from farming proceeds. I have two children; the late Tunde Kolawole and his sister. He travelled to the United Arab Emirates to seek greener pastures. He left about two years ago. He took ill three months ago. He said he went to a hospital and was diagnosed with liver problems. He worked in a firm in the UAE. He said he was coming home to treat himself. He took care of us. His father had been ill for some time even before he left the country. He was the one taking care of us. The day he was to leave the UAE for Nigeria with other Nigerians there, they initially refused to airlift him. They said he had no evidence to show that he was sick to justify being evacuated to Nigeria with others.

“I prayed about the situation and learnt later that they called the hospital which treated him to know the nature of his sickness. He was later airlifted with others. He called me the day he arrived in the country and I reached out to some persons including my sister to help me meet him when he arrived in Nigeria.

“She told me that she had arranged for him to be treated upon arrival in Nigeria. My sister called him and he said they were all driven away in a bus to an isolation centre. She was unable to reach him after then. We tried his mobile and it rang out many times without being answered. The day he picked it, I asked him if he had eaten around 11 am and he said he hadn’t.

“I was surprised because he was sick and ought to have eaten at that time. I called my sister in Lagos to tell her what he told me. She tried reaching him but the phone rang out without a response. It was the same situation for days as the mobile was no longer available. The next thing we heard was that he was dead. He was supposed to be taken to a hospital for treatment as there was a medical report he presented upon arrival to the authorities. He promised to take care of us, his wife and four kids; two boys and two girls. But death has denied him of doing that.’’

The grieving woman, who said things had been tough for the family, added that her late son’s wife had used all the goods in her provision store to take care of their kids.

Earlier, the Lagos State Health Commissioner, Prof Akin Abayomi, on May 12 said a Dubai-returnee died of coronavirus complications in a seeming reference to Tunde.

The commissioner, two days after, however, stated via Twitter that the COVID-19 result carried out on the 32-year-old male returned negative.

He apologised for what he described as “a presumed COVID19-related death” of the Dubai-returnee.

The commissioner said, “The death of a recent Dubai returnee previously announced on my social media handles earlier was a presumed #COVID19 related death. I hereby inform the general public that the Nigerian who recently returned from Dubai as part of a group of returnees who were placed in a COVID-19 isolation programme in Lekki, developed complications and was transferred to one of our facilities where he died.

“Because of the sudden nature of his demise and without any prior knowledge of his multiple preexisting conditions, it was presumed to be a COVID-19 related death pending confirmation by COVID-19 Gold standard test.

“This presumptive attribution is a precaution to ensure the safe clinical management of the patient and subsequent handling of the corpse.

“The definitive COVID-19 gold standard test has turned out to be negative for the COVID-19 infection and his death is no longer considered to have been attributable to COVID-19.”

The woman said Tunde’s corpse had been released to the family for burial. She stated, “His corpse was brought to us in Akure through my sister and another relative. He was buried on Friday.’’

Also speaking with our correspondent, the deceased’s widow, Joy said she had accepted her fate, adding that their kids were aged between 10 and two years.

She said, “It’s the eldest of the children aged 10 that normally asks after their father. My last conversation with my husband was when he returned to Nigeria on Wednesday (May 6). I asked about his health and he said he was okay. I told him not to stress himself. I also asked if he had eaten and he said no. I urged him to meet the management of where he was camped to tell them he was hungry.

“He said he didn’t see anybody but would try. I ended the call and called him again after 30 minutes but his voice had changed. I told him I would call his mother’s sister to prepare food and take it to where he was. But by the time they tried his phone to know where he was camped, it rang out. It was the same situation when I tried to reach him throughout that day.

“For a week, the phone was switched off. It was with shock that we learnt that he had died. The death certificate showed that he died on May 9. I don’t know where to start from. I was saddened by the news of his death. He was away for two years. I don’t know how to raise the school fees of the children and money to feed them.’’

Lesotho’s former first lady, Maesaiah Thabane, has left the country a day after a Court of Appeal ordered her rearrest, according to the nation’s police on Saturday.

Maesaiah Thabane is suspected of orchestrating the shooting of Lipolelo Thabane her husband’s estranged wife. who was gunned down outside her home in the capital Maseru, in 2017.

COVID-19: Kabba chief Imam alive, family says

The family of Chief Imam of Kabba, Kogi State, Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Ejibunu, on Saturday, confirmed that the Chief Imam is not dead.

This came following reports, on Saturday, that the Kabba Chief Imam is dead.

The spokesperson of the family, Alhaji Shaibu Adekunle Ejibunu, in a press statement, issued on Saturday, said they received with utmost surprise, the insinuation that Chief Imam of Kabba, Sheikh Ahmad Ejibunu is dead.

“This is a blatant lie, falsehood from the pit of hell, orchestrated blackmail to tarnish the family image, the Kabba community and its people, our well-wishers as well as the goodwill of the government of Kogi State on this issue.

“We debunked this in all its entirety. We pray that Almighty Allah be with our Imam, brother, community leader.

“Also we sincerely appreciate His Excellency, the Governor of Kogi State and the government for the concerns and supports, we thank the Obaro of Kabba, and all the other Ololu Obas for their continued prayers, all our leaders in Kabba and in the diaspora, the entire people of Kabba and Okun land.

Also, Senator Dino Melaye prayed for the quick recovery of the Kabba Chief Imam.

“Oh Lord our God. Out of your mercy and splendor, please heal the chief Imam of Kabba who is like a father to me. He is a very good man from a very noble family. Touch him and by extension Okunland in particular and Kogi State in general. COVID-19 is less harmful than malaria if detected early.

“Most cases have disappeared within 10 days of treatment. Once there is a symptom please go for test and let’s all observe all protocols as laid down by NCDC. NCDC has its own wahala but COVID is real. God bless us all. No soul by the resurrection power of our Lord Jesus Christ will be lost in Okun land and Kogi State. It is well with our state.”

A Nigerian lady took to her social media page to share the story of a man who was declared missing five years ago when he stepped out to buy suya and never returned but was just discovered to have been in jail for the last five years . He was said to have been picked up during a random raid by the Police.

Social media user, @Tobijulo91 shared on her page;

“A former colleague told me how her cousin went out one night to buy Suya down the street and they didn’t see him again. They searched everywhere, couldn’t find him. Year 1 passed, year 2, year 3, I believe it was in year 4 they decided to declare him dead and “buried” him.

“Year 5 her mum gets a call, a church had done an outreach in a particular prison and a young man threw a sheet of paper with her mum’s number on it. He begged the people to call that number as it was his Aunt’s and he was wrongly imprisoned. Luckily for him they did and her mum went to that prison and that’s how they discovered he was alive o.

“After another set of wahala they finally got him out. Man was in prison for 5 years!! What happened that night?? He went to buy Suya, there was an incident, police raided the street and carried EVERYONE. He begged and tried to convince them that he wasn’t a criminal, they didn’t listen.

“He was transferred 5 times to different prisons. 2 times to the North and once to the east. What he saw in prison ehn?”

Edo medical scientists submit Covid-19 herbal invention to NIPRD

In line with the search for a local solution in the cure for Covid-19, the Edo State-born medical scientist and pathologist, Odion Obumese, has submitted the Covid-19 herbal drug he invented to the Minister of Health and National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research & Development (NIPRD) for trails and approval.

Speaking with Vanguard on Thursday from Abuja in an online interview, Obumese said he worked with his twin brother, Akhere Obumese, who is also a trained medical scientist, a specialist in pathology and staff of Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua, Edo State.

According to Odion, the herbal drug, “Odmedvir” works to restore loss of appetite, and in the treatment of malaria parasite, viruses like Covid-19, hepatitis and HIV.

“Odmedvir also improves the immune system, helps in maintaining high blood pressure and raises glucose level. Generally, it has positive effects on tumours, bacteria, fungi and most inflammatory diseases, while maintaining psychological imbalances.

“However, the mode of action of the herbal drug is not clearly understood, but it seems it inhibits the protein coat of a virus. Odmedvir has broad-spectrum activities and actions in the body system, and it contains a combination of medicinal plants ingredients and photochemical content such as Azadirachtin, Nimbolinin, Nimbidin, Salannin, anthraquinone glycoside and sulphate glycosides, thymol and carvacrol, choline and acetylcholine and lectin. Other chemical components in Odmedvir are kolaveron, desacetylnimbinene, Nimbadiol, Numboilede, Ascorbic acid, Hexacosamol, amino acid, Caryophyllene, flavonoid, glycosides, sterols, phenols, humulene, threonine, zinc, arginine, and histidine.

“It also contains vitamin A, Omega 3, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, iron and calcium. Odmedvir helps infertility in both males and females and improves male potency.

Obumese also spoke of what he called “food salad for treatment for covid- 19 patients”, which include: a slice of papaya, one strawberry, a slice of one small leaf of aloe vera, half bulb of a small onion, one raw tomato, three sticks of banana, a stick of carrot, one lemon, five seeds of cashew nuts, and salmon fish; all mixed with yoghurt and taken once daily. He said these food items could also be blended into juice form and taken or mixed with lemon juice or yoghurt, depending on the clinical state of the patients.

Obumese recommends that treatment for Covid-19 patients with Odmedvir must be follow up with this food therapy.

The family has now told the State Government “to stop denying the obvious.”

“At the FMC, he was referred to the National Hospital in Abuja and the test conducted on him by the NCDC showed that he was Covid-19 positive.

“The test conducted on one of his sons who had been with him since came out negative.”

Shocking! George Floyd and the police officer that killed him were co-workers at a club

George Floyd and Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter in Floyd's death, worked together at a Minneapolis club as recently as last year, according to a report from local television station KSTP.

Maya Santamaria, former owner of El Nuevo Rodeo, said that both Floyd and Chauvin worked security at the club.

She said that the two could have crossed paths, though Chauvin mostly worked outside as an off-duty officer, while Floyd primarily was inside as a bouncer.

She wasn't sure if they knew each other.

"Chauvin was our off-duty police for almost the entirety of the 17 years that we were open," Santamaria told KSTP.

"They were working together at the same time, it's just that Chauvin worked outside and the security guards were inside."

Santamaria also told the TV station that Chauvin "had a real short fuse," adding that he often pulled out mace and pepper spray when she thought it was unwarranted.

Earlier Friday, Santamaria took to Facebook to lament the burning down of the building that houses the local Spanish-language radio station La Raza.

Santamaria is listed as the CEO of the radio station, which appears to be in the same building as El Nuevo Rodeo.

The building that housed La Raza and El Nuevo Rodeo is a couple of blocks away from a Target store protesters looted earlier this week.

"Such sad news to wake up and know that all your business and work was destroyed by the vandalizers," Santamaria wrote in Spanish in a Facebook post. "We didn't manage to rescue anything. My heart is in mourning today", she wrote.

Bauchi Government says illegal abortions responsible for mysterious deaths

Preliminary findings from investigation carried out by the Bauchi State Primary Healthcare Development Agency has revealed that illegal abortion by unqualified medical practitioners has killed 200 women in Bauchi, as well as the cause of mysterious deaths in Azare and other local government areas in the northern part of the state.

The Executive Chairman of the agency, Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, who disclosed this yesterday at an interactive session organized by the Bauchi State Public Health Media Network, said the investigation had not been concluded on the development, but preliminary findings had revealed that the number of such deaths was about 200, adding that the number could be more at the end of the investigation.

Mohammed said the deaths resulted from unwanted and unplanned pregnancies by both married and unmarried women of childbearing ages who after becoming pregnant visited quack health workers to terminate the pregnancies.

He said the lack of understanding of the importance of child spacing as well as ignorance of what to do with such pregnancy had become a major problem to family health in the state.

He emphasized the need for adequate sex education for the girl-child by parents, particularly mothers, to reduce unwanted pregnancies, thereby reducing deaths from complications.

Mama Muwa Isa who was apparently fighting back tears while speaking in Hausa told Vanguard that until very recently, people of her area plied bush paths to avoid the swamp created by rainfall along Sabon Kaura-Jos road.

She said it will be an honour to meet the governor and thank him personally for bringing a developmental project to her doorstep.

“Could you take me to the governor? I just want to thank him personally for this road (Sabon Kaura-Jos road). From when I was a child, I have always prayed that God will remember us and send us somebody who would see the construction of this road as his own project.

“Sometimes, I wondered how my grandchildren would survive what we went through on this road. It became a norm for several years, whenever we were stepping out, we would carry extra slippers along so that we could change it to the cleaner one when we were out of the road. Thank God that I lived long enough to witness this day. I am just thankful. I couldn’t be happier. Please tell him that I am grateful,” the grandmother said.

COVID-19: UK’s religious leaders say churches should be allowed to open before cinemas

Prominent UK church leaders today branded the mass closure of churches ‘unlawful and unnecessary’ as they threatened a judicial review into keeping them shut.

A coalition of Christian bishops and reverends has urged the Government to prioritise churches in its exit strategy from the coronavirus lockdown.

They said it was unfair for churches to be in the ‘bottom category of the most dangerous and least important services’ with beauty salons, pubs and cinemas.

The letter signed by 25 prominent church leaders – but not endorsed by the Church of England – is a pre-action legal warning against Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

However social media users have warned churches would be ‘risking the lives of congregations’ and some Christians said they are not ready to go back just yet.

And the National Secular Society told MailOnline today that religious activities should not be ‘privileged or prioritised over and above those of a secular nature’.

It comes after France’s Supreme Court last week ruled that the country’s ban on religious gatherings was illegal and ordered its government to relax restrictions.

All places of worship in Britain have been closed since mass gatherings were banned by the Government on March 16 – and they are not expected to reopen before July 4.

But churches in Northern Ireland have now reopened for private prayer – albeit with strict social distancing rules and hand sanitiser dispensers in place.

The UK church leaders warn the closure of churches is an ‘extreme interference’ with human rights by contravening freedom of thought, belief and religion.

The letter adds that the regulations are ‘disproportionate in the circumstances where the overwhelming majority of churches had closed down voluntarily’.

The leaders say they want a constructive dialogue with the Government but will seek a judicial review of the ban if Ministers fail to address their concerns.

The letter adds that the regulations are ‘disproportionate in the circumstances where the overwhelming majority of churches had closed down voluntarily’.

Among the signatories is Matthew Ashimolowo, leader of UK megachurch Kingsway International Christian Centre in East London, which has a congregation of 12,000.

Another is David Hathaway, a well-known evangelist in Britain, who said: ‘The Government has failed to recognise the centrality of faith to a Christian’s life.

‘Sunday worship and access to church buildings have been treated like a mere hobby or pastime rather than foundational to national and Christian life.’

A third, Ade Omooba, co-chair of the National Church Leaders Forum, said: ‘It cannot be right that at present it is lawful to go to a bike shop, B&Q, visit a chiropractor or dry cleaner, and not be allowed to receive Holy Communion or engage in silent prayer in a church.

‘Churches have traditionally been at the centre of the communities, able to offer counsel, prayer and comfort at times of national crisis.

‘They are at the heart of our communities helping to combat mental health problems, addictions, risk of suicide, domestic violence, poverty and risk.

‘Churches deliver an essential service to the community. The Government should not be putting churches as the lowest priority services for re-opening from the lockdown.

‘We look forward to the response from the government to this letter and hope that we can engage with the government to see church ministry prioritised as we start to exit the lockdown.’

Nigeria can’t win 2021 AFCON – Gernot Rohr

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr said it is hard for his team to win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations because they are not the best team on the continent.

The German tactician recently agreed to a two-and-a-half-year deal to continue his work as the handler of the three-time African champions, putting to bed speculation around his future.

On Wednesday, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Amaju Pinnick revealed the conditions in the new contract which include a mandate to qualify the country for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and also win the next Afcon in Cameroon.

The 66-year-old guided the Super Eagles to a third-place finish in Egypt last year, however, he disclosed that the new target might be difficult to achieve.

“When you go to a tournament it is to win it,” Rohr told BBC Sport. “We finished third in the last one, and everybody wants to progress. But we know also that it is very difficult to win this tournament because we are not number one in Africa.

“But it is good to have these milestones and ambition.” Aside from the competition targets, he is also expected to reside in Nigeria and receive his salary in local currency (naira).

Rohr, who previously coached Gabon, Niger and Burkina Faso before joining the Super Eagles, said he understands the risks that come with the new contract.

He is also confident the squad he’s raised is capable of helping him to get the job done.

“My contract all the time is a risk because it is finished when we are eliminated from a competition – whether the Afcon or World Cup,” he added.

90 year-old grandma protects terrified black grandson from police aiming guns at him (video)

A 90-year-old grandmother protected her terrified black grandson as police aimed their guns at him.

Officers reportedly said they followed Tye Anders, 21, to his grandmum's home in Midland, Texas, US, after allegedly spotting him running a stop sign.

Shocking footage shows Mr Anders lying down on his grandmother's front lawn as three police officers point their pistols at him.

The encounter comes just days after a white officer was filmed kneeling on the neck of African American George Floyd, who died.

In police dashcam footage of the standoff with Mr Anders, his grandmother can be seen walking across her lawn to stand next to her grandson.

In another video of the incident, one of the officers can be heard telling Mr Anders to walk backwards towards them.

A panicked woman can be heard screaming 'he's scared, y'all have guns on him, he's black do y'all not see how many black people are getting shot?'

She added: "Y'all have guns on him, he's only 21 of course he's f*****g scared. I'd be scared too, I ain't walking towards you because y'all going to shoot."

The woman told the officers they would find 'any reason to shoot', adding that black people get punished 'just because of the colour of our skin'.

Mr Anders can be heard saying 'I'm scared' in the video.

His grandmother then crosses the lawn with her walking stick and stands next to him.

The crowd around Mr Anders pleads with the officers to lower their weapons and 'call somebody black out here'.

The policemen then approach the 21-year-old and start to handcuff him, while urging his grandmother to back off.

She then appears to fall over her grandson, sparking chaos as bystanders rush in to help her.

The woman filming the encounter screams 'y'all pushed her' before the video cuts.

Police dashcam footage then shows officers dragging the man to a squad car, while his grandmother remains sat on the lawn for several minutes, visibly distraught.

Mr Anders can be heard crying and saying 'they just wanted to f**k with me' and 'why are you doing this?' while in the back of the police vehicle.

He was arrested for evading police and taken to Midland County Jail, although he has since been released on bond, Mail Online reports.

According to the news site, his attorney said: "We believe and maintain that this was a stop based on racial profiling and there was no traffic violation."

They claimed an officer assaulted Mr Anders in a police car after he was arrested.
