British Teen charged over massive twitter hack

A British teenager has been charged with hacking the social media site Twitter and stealing thousands of dollars worth of Bitcoin by taking over the accounts of celebrities and business leaders.

The US Department of Justice charged Mason Sheppard, 19, of Bognor Regis, with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and the intentional access of a protected computer.

Mr Sheppard was one of three people charged with the hack, which took place earlier this month and saw accounts belonging to Bill Gates, Elon Musk and Barack Obama hijacked and used to post links to Bitcoin wallets along with false claims that payments would be matched.

More than $100,000 was stolen in the scam, the DoJ said. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 45 years in prison.

United States Attorney David L. Anderson said: 'Criminal conduct over the Internet may feel stealthy to the people who perpetrate it, but there is nothing stealthy about it.'

S.e.x shop assault: Senator Abbo now FREE

Adamawa-North lawmaker, Senator Elisha Abbo, has won the case of assault instituted against him before a Magistrate Court in Zuba, Abuja by the Nigeria Police Force.

This is despite a viral video showing Abbo assaulting a woman, Osimibibra Warmate; and a televised press conference in which the lawmaker apologised to the victim, Punch reports.

According to a copy of the judgment obtained by the medium, the Magistrate who upheld a no-case submission filed by Abbo, said the police failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the lawmaker assaulted Warmate on May 11, 2019.

The case with suit number CR/010/2019 spanned from July 8, 2019, till June 18, 2020.

The two witnesses that testified against Abbo were Warmate – who was the nominal complainant – and a police officer, ASP Mary Daniel, who investigated the matter.

In her testimony, Warmate said she had gone to visit a friend, Kemi, at Pleasure Chest Sex Toy Shop, Banex Plaza, Wuse 2, Abuja on May 11, 2019 when the lawmaker walked in with three women.

She said suddenly, one of the women that accompanied Abbo started vomiting and later fainted.

Warmate said when she left the shop, she received a frantic call from Kemi asking her to come to her aid as the lawmaker had accused her of putting something in the shop’s air conditioner system that caused one of his female companions to vomit and was threatening to get her arrested.

The victim said when she returned to the shop and was cleaning up the vomit, two men, one of whom was a policeman in uniform, barged into the shop.

She said Abbo told them to arrest Kemi for insulting him but Kemi began pleading and then picked up her phone to tell her father that she was being arrested.

Warmate added, “As one of the men moved to take the phone, I begged him and said it was her father that she was talking to. Then the defendant (Abbo) pounced on me, punched me on my face and in the eye. He slapped me several times and asked me why I interfered.

“He said he would make me a scapegoat for interfering and asked the two men to arrest me. The defendant (Abbo) pulled me by the hair and pushed me downstairs and to a car. I called my mother and I was being arrested.

“While in the car, the people on the premises told the defendant (Abbo) that he needed to report to the police on the premises before he could leave but the defendant (Abbo) refused and the security guards in the plaza had to lock the gate.”

Warmate said her mother was able to intervene and after much pleading, she was let go by Abbo.

The victim said she began to feel severe pains in her body due to the beating and she went to a private hospital, Mega Eyesight, and also reported the matter to the police.

Under cross-examination, Warmate admitted that she was not a nursing mother at the time of the incident as widely reported.

She also stated that she was not the one who recorded the video of the incident but obtained it from the owner of the shop where the incident occurred.

Warmate also stated that the video presented as evidence was an abridged version of everything that transpired on the day of the incident.

The second witness, who is a police officer, told the court that she took statements from the victim, the senator and two others who witnessed the incident including Alaba Udeme, the mother of the victim.

The policewoman said because the shop where the incident took place remained close, she could not access the CCTV and had to rely on a disc given to her by the victim.

The video of the incident, a separate video of Abbo’s public apology and a report signed by one Dr. Amobrose Ibegbule, who treated the victim, were tendered as evidence.

However, when the prosecution rested its case, Abbo did not open his defence but filed a no-case submission, asking the court to dismiss the charges preferred against him.

In his ruling, the magistrate Ilelah said, “The evidence and exhibits tendered do not disclose a prima facie case of the alleged crime of criminal force and assault against the defendant (Abbo).

“The prosecution’s case centred on the oral evidence of PW1 (Warmate) and the two discs contained a CCTV footage of the incident and alleged video clip of an apology from the defendant (Abbo).”

He said the medical report of Mega Sight Eye Clinic did not disclose in detail what happened to the victim and Dr. Ambrose Ibegbule who wrote the report was not called as a witness.

The court said the video of the press conference showing Senator Abbo apologising was not tantamount to an admission of guilt as it wasn’t a confessional statement.

Ilelah said the testimony of the victim was “so weak because the allegation has not been substantiated in any material particular.”

The court said the police did not do a proper investigation as it relied solely on the statement of the victim.

The magistrate stated, “The IPO (Investigating Police Officer) did not investigate this case at all or she just charged the defendant to court via the F.I.R (First Information Report) without due care and attention. In fact, she has succeeded in creating a doubt in the mind of this court during cross-examination and the Supreme Court held that where there is a doubt in a criminal trial, such doubt should be resolved in favour of the defendant.”

He said the court would rely on the law and not logic or media reports because he who alleges must prove.

“The defendant is hereby discharged under Section 303(3)(c) and (d) of the ACJA 2015,” the magistrate said.

No herbal medicine has been approved for COVID-19 –NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has insisted that it is yet to approve any herbal medicine for the treatment of COVID-19.

The Director of Public Affairs of the agency, Dr Abubakar Jimoh, in an interview with Punch correspondent, said a drug could only be certified for use after going through clinical trials.

He said, “There is a procedure for everything, we are talking about human lives here, people cannot just put together concoction and expect people to consume it just like that. So far the herbal mixture will be for public consumption due diligence must be followed.

“Science is one, it does not tell lies; even if the son of the NAFDAC DG brings herbal product and the laboratory has failed it, we cannot go ahead and register it. Forget about sentiment, NAFDAC doesn’t have anything to gain by not registering herbal products. Is it not to our pride if register and certify products for consumption?

“The major problem in the herbal medicine industry is that, until recently, most of them are illiterate. They do not understand the language of science, what we are trying to do is to teach them how they can pass on this knowledge by connecting them with the academics who understand the language of science. But it is unfortunate that the illiterate person is always suspicious of the educated person, thinking he will steal his inventions.”

The NAFDAC DG, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, in a statement, titled, ‘Approval for listing status by national agency for food and drug administration and control,’ said the agency was processing twenty one herbal medicinal products for “Safe to use” or Listing status.

“Many of the applicants claim that their products are immune boosters and anti-infectives useful for relief of symptoms that could be associated with COVID-19. However, no clinical study has been done yet on any of the products to prove their claim of efficacy.

“Once the product is able to meet all requirements, a listing status is granted with a clear DISCLAIMER that states clearly that claims have not been evaluated by NAFDAC. The applicant can arrange for clinical trials that will involve the use of human subjects in order to prove efficacy or claim for treatment following laid down procedures and with the approval of NAFDAC,” Adeyeye said.

34-year-old nurse dies after being stabbed 13 times by husband

Police in Gilgil Town, Nakuru County, Kenya have arrested a 34-year-old man on allegations of killing his wife, also aged 34.

Josephine Wangari Kamau, a nurse at the psychiatric wing of Gilgil Sub-County Hospital, was killed at around 5am Tuesday, July 28, police say.

It is alleged that Wangari was murdered by her spouse, James Maina, after a quarrel ensued between the two.

Gilgil OCPD John Onditi told K24 Digital that Wangari and her partner had first argued on Monday night (July 27) before a neighbour intervened and a relative calm was restored.

At around 4am Tuesday, the husband-and-wife started their conflict afresh, the couple’s house-help told police.

“The housemaid said she heard Wangari pleading with her husband to stop battering her. At around 5am, Wangari’s screams faded,” said Onditi.
A few minutes past 5am, Maina emerged from the bedroom carrying their 7-month old son and handed the baby over to the house-help, saying he was going to purchase drugs from a nearby chemist because his wife had “developed a headache”.

Maina locked the door leading to his bedroom, said the nanny.A few minutes past 5am, Maina emerged from the bedroom carrying their 7-month old son and handed the baby over to the house-help, saying he was going to purchase drugs from a nearby chemist because his wife had “developed a headache”.

Maina locked the door leading to his bedroom, said the nanny.
“The housemaid ran after Maina to ask why he had locked his bedroom door yet his ‘ailing’ wife was inside the room. The suspect is said to have told the house-help to mind her own business, and stop meddling in their affairs,” said Onditi.

The nanny, who had grown suspicious of Maina’s actions, alerted neighbours, who rushed to the scene.

The neighbours managed to break down Maina’s bedroom door and found Wangari lying unconscious on the bed.

An ambulance was called and on arrival to the victim’s house, nurses confirmed Wangari had already succumbed to her injuries.

The deceased’s spouse, a businessman in Gilgil Town, later Tuesday surrendered himself to police.

“He had, however, taken rat poison with the intention of committing suicide. So, we had to take him to Gilgil Sub-County Hospital first for emergency care before we arraign him,” said Onditi.

Wangari’s body was taken to Gilgil Sub-County Hospital morgue.

14 year-old girl 'r*ped by coronavirus patient while pal filmed at quarantine centre'

A 14-year-old girl has been r*ped by a coronavirus patient as his friend stood guard at the largest quarantine centre in India, police say.

The alleged victim and both men had tested positive for the virus and were staying at the 10,000-bed facility in Delhi when the s.e.x attack is claimed to have taken place.

Police said all three had mild Covid-19 symptoms when the alleged attack in a bathroom with the 19-year-old rape suspect as his pal filmed the incident on July 15.

It is believed the girl had been at the quarantine centre for around a week, India Express reports.

The rape was reported to police after the girl told a relative at the centre she had been attacked.

Senior police official Parvinder Singh told the publication: "The accused have been arrested and sent to judicial custody but will remain in institutional care until they recover from the infection."

Parvinder also said that the girl was transferred to another hospital while the two men were taken to a different location where they remain in custody.

Police are investigating the r*pe claim.

The latest data suggests that India is the third worst coronavirus-hit country in the world.

Hundreds of s.e.x offenders vanish from police records after changing their names

Hundreds of convicted s.e.x offenders have slipped off the police's radar simply by changing their names.

Figures obtained from just 16 of the UK's 46 police forces showed that 913 people with s.e.x offense convictions have gone missing.

It is believed that many of these people have changed their names and then not told the police, which is an offence.

The Safeguarding Alliance found that 1,349 other offenders have changed their name via deed poll and then told the police.

Around half of the police forces in the UK could not provide data on name changes when asked via Freedom of Information requests, suggesting the figure is significantly higher, Sky News reports.

Members of the public are less able to do a check into someone's history if they are going by another identity.

Convicted s.e.x offenders have also been found to have changed their name before repeating their original offence.

Terry Price changed his name five times over the course of five decades, Sky News reports.

He was found guilty of a string of s.e.x crimes during the same period, including the r*pe of a six-year-old girl.

When the girl - Della Wright, now 47 - recently reported the crimes, she found Price had changed his name to Robert McEwan.

Ms Wright has questioned how many jobs with children the s.e.x criminal may have been allowed to have since changing his name.

"We don't know but we know he's a prolific offender," she told Sky News.

"It makes me really angry and it shouldn't be possible.

"This person has been through the system not once but countless times - and even as recently as 2016 he was allowed to change his name again whilst in prison."

Emily Konstantas, from the Safeguarding Alliance, said that changing one's name allows a person to get a new passport and driving licence.

The Alliance asked the Disclosure and Baring Service (DBS) how they guard against people changing their names.

The DBS said that it did not do background checks into whether applicants had changed their names.

Rita Daniels, mother of young Nollywood actress Regina Daniels, cursed a social media user for accusing her over her daughter’s choice of husband.

Sometime last month, Regina announced the arrival of her baby boy. The boy is named ’Munir Neji Ned-Nwoko.

A social media user trolled Rita, accusing her of setting her daughter up for ”single mother life”. This he said is because of money.

”May single parenthood be a permanent trademark and symbol of your family and generations to come. IJN (In Jesus Name)”.

Why we’re seizing donkey skin in Nigeria — FG

The Nigerian Agricultural Quarantine Services, an arm of Federal Ministry of Agriculture, has explained its invasion of donkey skin processing camps across the federation and seizing donkey skin from owners.

The director of the agency, Dr. Olusegun Awoniyi said the Federal Government has made it an offense for anybody to kill a donkey and trade on its skin.

He said the policy was made by the federal government to avoid the animal, which he described as “work animal,” from going into extinction.

According to Awoniyi, “apart from Nigeria, many countries have placed ban on killing of donkeys and trading on its skin.

Nigeria has received a lot of memos from many countries discouraging the killing of donkeys and trading on its skin or meat.”

Dr Awoniyi disclosed this while reacting to the alleged invasion of donkey skin processing camps of Dried Meat Preservers Association of Nigeria, DMPAN and seizing of over 2000 processed donkey skin worth over 80 million naira, across the states in the country.

Ukrainian rapper's wife 'chopped up her dead husband and kept him in the fridge [photos]

The dismembered body of a popular rap singer was found in his flat in Russia after his wife reportedly chopped up his body and cleaned his organs in a washing machine and sprinkled them with salt.

Known as Andy Cartwright, 30, his wife claimed he had died of a drug overdose in St Petersburg.

Marina Kukhal, 36, told detectives that she did not want his fans to know he had died such an 'inglorious' death - and dismembered his body over four days storing body parts in black plastic bags and her fridge.

The limbs were reportedly sawn 'perfectly' and the body parts sprinkled with salt.

Kukhal used a knife, hammer, hacksaw, plastic bowl and chopping board, police say.

The couple's two year old child was in the same flat as she severed the singer's body parts, it was reported.

Russian police say they have opened a murder probe into the death of the star, whose real name was Alexander Yushko, originally from Ukraine.

New shocking claims reported by BAZA news outlet suggested the rapper's internal organs were cleaned in a washing machine by his wife after the body was dismembered.
The limbs were sawn 'perfectly' and the body parts sprinkled with salt.

In addition, the investigators found traces of male hands on one of the forearms, as if the victim had been grabbed, said a report citing unnamed law enforcement sources.

The widow had also thoroughly cleaned their apartment on main street Nevsky Prospect in St Petersburg, it was reported.

The man's friends said he had alcohol problems but did not take drugs.

Reports also claimed that the woman's mother had assisted her at the apartment.

The woman's lawyer Irina Skurtu - who had urged the wife to go to police over the dismembering - denied reports that she put body parts in the washing machine.
She also disputed that the rapper's mother-in-law had been involved.

The unnamed mother-in-law has been ordered not to leave St Petersburg, say reports. Newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda said no drugs were found on the rapper's body, citing sources.

The widow was detained. She is expected to undergo a polygraph test as part of the murder probe. She claimed she found a syringe next to his body.

He had become addicted to hard drugs during the pandemic, she told his fans on social media.

Forensic tests are underway in an attempt to establish the cause of death.

We use tyre jack as guns to rob victims ― Uber driver

We use tyre jack as guns to rob victims ― Uber driver
Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Lagos State Police Command, have arrested an Uber driver, Andrew Valentino, 38, who used his car for ‘ Catch-in-the –air’ robbery, otherwise known as one chance, dispossessing unsuspecting passengers of their cash, phones and valuables.

He is not alone. He confessed to be operating with the trio of Tony Onwoluwe, 29; Adesoji Oluwafemi, 36 and Idoko Michael, 33, who were also arrested.

Their modus operandi involved picking passengers from designated points. While one of them would drive the car, others would stand at designated bus-stops where they would board the car with unsuspecting passengers, only to point a gun at him or her, with an order to surrender everything in his or her possession, on reaching a convenient place. Thereafter, they would push their victims out of the vehicle.

During interrogation, Valentino, disclosed that his gang operated on the Lekki-Ajah route, adding that he was introduced into robbery by Idoko.

According to him: “I met Idoko at a bar. On that day, my car broke down and I had no cash to fix it. He approached me and asked why I was still waiting after everyone had left. He promised to help me make more money after the car had been fixed.

“We met again at a different bar and he told me how to use the car for one chance operation. Immediately, I called the owner of the car to inform him of the problem. I told him I would refund the amount used to replace the car engine if he bought me another one.

“When the car was fixed, I met Idoko and we started using it ( car) for operation on the Ajah- Lekki Rad alone. Later, Adesoji and Onwoluwe joined us.”

He disclosed that his gang never used a gun during the operation.

My role
On his part, Idoko, said, “Velentino and I usually sat behind posing as passengers, Oluwafemi would drive while Onwoluwe would sit in front, holding the tyre jack. On reaching a convenient place, the driver would order Onwoluwe to cock the gun. He (Onwoluwe) would use a hammer to hit the jack, making it sound like a gun.

“We would order the victim to bring out his or her Automated Teller Machine, ATM card and also provide us with the pin. After pushing the victim out, we would drive to an ATM Machine, where we would withdraw every dim in the account.”

Onwoluwe on his part said he joined the gang six months ago, adding “The money I made was just for feeding and clothing.”

The suspects would soon be charged to court. Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Mr Hakeem Odumosu, warned criminals to desist from their nefarious activities or have the same fate befall them.

British-Ghanaian rapper, Solo 45 is jailed for 24 years for holding four women against their will and raping them 21 times

A grime artist who held four women against their will and repeatedly r*ped them was today jailed for 24 years.

Andy Anokye, 33, who performed under the stage name Solo 45, was found guilty at Bristol Crown Court of 30 charges relating to a two-year period.

These were 21 r*pes, five counts of false imprisonment, two counts of assault by penetration and two of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The musician, who was part of the grime collective Boy Better Know, derived s.e.xual pleasure from torturing the women by water-boarding, interrogating, assaulting and r*ping them.

He claimed the acts were part of consensual role play, or a game he played called "Catch me, R*pe me", and said he told women he would "terrorise" them.

Police began investigating Anokye, who is from London but had a harbourside apartment in Bristol, in 2017 after a woman complained she had been r*ped by him.

After his arrest, officers discovered harrowing footage filmed by Anokye on his mobile phone that revealed he had abused multiple women.

Judge William Hart imposed an extended sentence, meaning Anokye will serve 24 years in prison and five on licence, and ordered he must sign the s.e.x offenders register for life.

The judge told Anokye, who appeared by video link from HMP Long Lartin, he had "no sexual boundaries or empathy for those concerned".

He said Anokye had "become addicted" to the "perverted pleasure" he took from abusing the women in the case.

The judge added: "You have a background that includes gang associations and criminal violence.

"I am entirely satisfied that your career as an artist was flourishing at the time of this offending and would have gone to greater heights.

"The popular acclaim that greeted performances of your best-known track Feed Em To The Lions was evident in the various videos that the jury saw of your performances.

"You were part of a well-known collective - Boy Better Know. The fellow artists from that collective have achieved great success."

The judge said none of those fellow artists were aware of Anokye's behaviour, or "dark side".

He added: "But none of those artists, dedicated to their craft, knew of your dark side and they are in no way tainted by your misdeeds which were carried out in a wholly private and hidden way.

"Your convictions have deprived you of that career but the fault is yours alone."

During the trial, the graphic video clips filmed by Anokye were played to the jury.

They showed Anokye interrogating the women about previous s.e.xual partners, slapping them, insulting them and r*ping them.

Dubai Crown Prince pays hospital bills of Nigerian mother stranded with quadruplets

Dubai's Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has paid the hospital expenses of a Nigerian mother and her quadruplets stranded in the city with mounting medical bills, according to the hospital.

Suliyat Adulkareem, 29, gave birth to the babies, two boys, and two girls, at the Latifa Hospital for Women and Children on July 1.

They were born prematurely at nearly 31 weeks through an emergency C-section and placed on ventilators at the neonatal intensive care unit, the hospital said in a statement.

However, the family had no medical insurance and racked up more than AED 400,000 (about $108,000) in medical expenses since the quadruplets were born, their father Tijani Abdulkareem told CNN.

The Nigerian community and other nationals in Dubai rallied around them to help raise AED 42,000 (around $11,500) to pay part of the bills.

The Crown Prince stepped in to pay the bills after he came across the initial CNN report highlighting the family's story.

He was moved by their plight and informed his office to assist the family, the hospital said.

Abdulkareem told CNN he was shocked by the ruler's generosity, and the couple have decided to name two of their babies after him.

One of the girls will also be called Latifa after the hospital, he said.

"It's just a huge favor, and we are still in shock because we didn't even know how to get the money. I had been sleepless wondering how to pay the bill," Abdulkareem said.

Abdulkareem, a chef at a restaurant in the city, said he was distressed when he discovered his wife was going to have quadruplets.

The couple, who live in Dubai, had planned to have the babies in Nigeria because they could not afford medical insurance but were unable to travel because of the coronavirus air restrictions that prevented commercial flights between the two countries.

Abdulkareem said his wife gave birth nearly two months earlier than her delivery date.

The elated father said the family has received "unbelievable" support from the Nigerian community, and various nationalities which has helped them pay for two months rent for a bigger place to accommodate the quadruplets.

Awolowo died without Christ, he never fulfilled his destiny – Olukoya

General Overseer, Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, MFM, Pastor Daniel Olukoya has said that the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo never fulfilled his destiny because he did not give his life to Christ.

He said despite the greatness and exploit of Awolowo on the political scene, he refused to give his life to Christ even when the great Apostle Joseph Ayo Babalola once went to his house.

In one of his preaching, as captured by Church Gist, a popular Facebook Christian page, Olukoya said “The great Apostle, Joseph Ayo Babalola once went to the house of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Who knows Chief Obafemi Awolowo? Awo. Anybody heard about Awo?

“Now let me be honest with you as a man of God. By the time the Civil War of Nigeria ended, Ojukwu (Odumegwu) said something. He said, “Nigeria did not fight us, Awo fought us”…Because he was Minister of Finance at that time and Nigeria did not borrow 1 Kobo. Not only that, he gave some advice that made victory possible. Then when he died, Ojukwu now said, this man was ‘the best President Nigeria never had’ and when you say Presidential Debate and you put Awo on TV to be debating with the others, by the time Awo begins to talk, the others look like fools. They look like fools because the knowledge with which he is talking and what he is saying, makes them look like fools.”

Olukoya added: “I had a friend who was in the Executive Military Council during the time of Gowon, the time they brought Awo from prison (Calabar) to become Finance Minister. He said when they brought him to that Executive Council and he sat down and looked at all those soldiers. He said “you want to make me Minister of Finance? Okay, let me give you a short lecture”.

“Then he gave those military boys a short lecture on Primary School Economics. By the time he finished, all those people who were there gave him a round of applause. Simple Primary Economics. Awo was the person that said that anybody who wants to trade with Nigeria, has to be primitive trade by barter. Bring this, I take this. Bring this, I take this. We are not going to be bringing money to go and buy. When you bring, we take. It’s an exchange.

“And when they were going to do Festac’ 77, they asked for Awo’s opinion. Awo said, “This Festac ’77 is a show of our primitivity and that the white man will be quite happy to see us exhibit our primitivity. He said that the money that would be used for Festac ’77 should be spent on technology for education, for things that will move people forward, not going back to the idols that dragged us to where we were, and the man had this uncanny attribute of being right.

“One day they asked him a question on television. They said, “why is it that you don’t take advice from other politicians?”. He said “Advice?, how can I take advice from someone who is busy dancing with free women on the street at night when I’m busy struggling and thinking about how things will go forward?”. That’s Awo. I’ve been to other places in the world. Do you know the President I see that matches Awo in intelligence is Fidel Castro of Cuba. When you see that one too talk, you will know that this man understands what he is talking about.”

According to Olukoya, “The great Apostle, Joseph Babalola went to visit Awo. Awo was not at home, he met his wife (Hannah Dideolu). And he said, “thus saith the Lord, the Lord said he has called me on the spiritual arena and he has called this man on the political arena. For this man to fulfill his calling, he has to surrender his life to Jesus”. Awo never surrendered his life to Jesus till he died and Awo never fulfilled his destiny.

“Can you raise your right hand everybody. Say My Father, every destiny waster assigned to my calling, DIE!”

First dog to test positive for COVID-19 in the U.S. has died

A German shepherd in New York that had the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in a dog in the U.S. has died.

Robert and Allison Mahoney of Staten Island told National Geographic that their 7-year-old shepherd, Buddy, developed breathing problems in mid-April after Robert had been sick with the coronavirus for several weeks. A veterinarian tested Buddy in May and found him positive for the virus.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported in June that a German shepherd in New York state was the first dog in the country to test positive for COVID-19, but did not identify the owners.

Buddy’s health declined steadily after he developed breathing problems and thick nasal mucus in April. He was euthanized on July 11 after he started vomiting clotted blood, the Mahoneys told National Geographic.

It’s unknown if the coronavirus played a role in his death. Blood tests indicated Buddy likely had lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system, veterinarians told the family.

A spokesman for the New York City Department of Health said arrangements were made to take the dog’s body for a necropsy but when the instructions were shared with the veterinarian, the body had already been cremated.

A USDA database of confirmed cases of the coronavirus in animals in the United States includes 12 dogs, 10 cats, a tiger and a lion. The agency says there is currently no evidence that animals play a significant role in spreading the coronavirus but it appears the virus can spread from people to animals in some situations.

Borno Senator Ali Ndume tells FG to stop pardoning ex-Boko Haram insurgents

The senator representing Borno south, Ali Ndume, has kicked against the reintegration of former Boko Haram fighters into the society.

At least 600 former insurgents completed a de-radicalisation, rehabilitation and reintegration (DRR) programme in July this year.

But during an interview on BBC Hausa, Ndume warned the government to stop rehabilitating them, because they will never repent.

“This government’s programme is unacceptable to our people. The right thing is to stop it, forthwith.

“They are like Kharajites. Many among those released have since run away. They will never repent.

“The government should know what to do about them. But not re-introducing someone to you, who has killed your parent, or your relations,” Ndume said.

The military had in 2016 launched Operation Safe Corridor, an initiative for the deradicalisation and rehabilitation of ex-Boko Haram fighters, with the aim of reintegrating repentant Boko Haram members into society.

Emmy awards ceremony to be held online due to pandemic

Emmy Awards Ceremony To Be Held Online Due To Pandemic
A day after announcing nominations for the Emmy Awards, the Television Academy on Wednesday informed top nominees that the ceremony in September will be held online because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The announcement was expected given the restrictions and lockdowns imposed since the virus outbreak which has wreaked havoc in the entertainment industry.

The Emmys television’s equivalent of the Oscars will take place on September 20 and will be the first major awards show in Hollywood since the coronavirus crisis began.

Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel is set to host the festivities broadcast on ABC.
In the letter sent to select nominees and the contents of which were confirmed to AFP by an Academy spokesman, organizers said they were forced to make the tough decision to hold the ceremony online given the circumstances. According to the letter signed by the producers of the event and Kimmel:

Aside from NOT being able to come together in one place, we also acknowledge that our world is going through a challenging moment in many ways”. We’ll be producing an event that is filled with warmth and humanity, which celebrates the power of television to bring us together and to help us shape our world. We’re going to make you look fabulous, we’re exploring the cutting edge of technology to allow us to use good cameras and lighting and look forward to working with you to produce your unique ‘on screen’ moments.

The letter said that organizers would work closely with the nominees, filming them at home and other locations, to ensure they stand out on the big night.

As to the dress code, the letter said given the informal theme of the ceremony, nominees could decide what to wear.

If you want to be in formal wear, we’d love that, but equally if you’re in the UK and it’s 3 a.m., perhaps you want to be in designer pajamas and record from your bed! We want to work with you to style your moments, but want you to guide us on your levels of comfort, where you want to be, who you want to be with, what you want to wear, etc.

Oyo reopens praying grounds for Eid-el-Kabir prayers

Oyo reopens praying grounds for Eid-el-Kabir prayers
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Thursday ordered reopening of praying grounds for Muslims in the state for the 2020 Eid-el-Kabir prayers.

Makinde in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, however, warned that Muslim faithful must ensure strict compliance with COVID-19 protocols in the state.

Makinde said that it has become imperative for the sake of public health and well being of all worshippers that the Eid prayers are conducted in strict compliance with the guidelines on prevention of COVID-19.

He urged the leadership of each praying ground in the state to ensure the availability of handwashing points and compulsory use of nose masks.
“As the Muslim Ummah prepare to undertake this year’s Eid-el-Kabir prayers, the Government of Oyo State wishes to advert Islamic clerics and leaders to the need to maintain strict compliance with COVID-19 protocols, especially the social distancing rule.

“The Eid Praying Grounds across the state have, upon the directive of the Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, been opened to Muslims for the purpose of the 2020 Eid-el-Kabir prayers.

“His Excellency reckons that prayers are important to overcome the challenges that presently assail us, especially the COVID-19 pandemic.

“However, just like many aspects of our lives that have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be an adjustment to Eid prayer gatherings.

“There is the need to ensure that not more than 25 percent of worshippers are allowed at every instance in order to ensure compliance with the social distancing rule.

“Similarly, let it also be noted that no worshipper should be allowed into the praying ground without face masks and readiness to wash hands with soap and water in compliance with COVID-19 protocols.

“To further ensure safety and ownership of the Covid-19 preventive measures, the Emergency Operations Centre, EOC, of the Oyo State Covid-19 Task Force, has sent advisories to major markets and shopping malls, on the need for strict compliance with Covid-19 preventive protocols during this festive period and beyond.

“The EOC has also contacted all the health educators in the 33 LGAs in the state with a mandate to reach out to possible places of gathering and advise on the need for responsible behaviour, just as the centre has revved up risk communication advisories on radio.

“In addition to these measures, however, all clerics and leaders are expected to take on the responsibility of guiding our people to pay attention to even the minutest detail on how to prevent the spread of COVID-19 during this festivity.

“The need to follow all laid down guidelines on COVID-19 prevention must be emphasized to every resident of the state at this period, in accordance with the Own Your Action initiative of the State’s COVID-19 Task Force, which emphasizes that our wellbeing and safety are individual responsibilities.

“The Oyo State government wishes the Muslim Ummah a peaceful Eid-el-Kabir, filled with the blessings and benevolence of Almighty Allah.”

Bill Gates supports Trump... wants schools reopened

Bill Gates has sided with President Donald Trump in arguing for the reopening of schools in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, saying the 'benefits outweigh the costs for younger students.'

The Microsoft founder, 64, rallied for schools to open in an interview with CNBC’s Squawk Box.

'I’m a big believer that for young children, the benefits in almost every location -- particularly if you can protect the teachers well -- the benefits outweigh the costs,' he said.

However, he said there’s a less pressing need for older students to return to in-person schooling.

'As you get up to age, like, 13 and higher, then you’ll have to look at your locale to decide what you’ll do with high schools. And if they’re not in, then you have to put massive effort into trying to get there to be continued learning online,' he said.

School districts across the country are debating whether to open schools or delaying the school year, but there are concerns over the safety of teachers and students and fears over a second wave of the virus.

To date there are over 4.3million infections of the virus and over 148,000 deaths from COVID-19 in the US.

Trump has repeatedly pushed for schools to reopen. On July 6 he tweeted in all caps: 'Schools must open in the fall!!!'

However, his position isn’t shared with Democrats.
