Supreme Court ruling: Atiku releases statement

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, criticised the verdict of the Supreme Court on the 2019 presidential elections on Wednesday.

Atiku, the main challenger to President Muhammadu Buhari at the election, said the top court has been hijacked by Mr Buhari’s dictatorial tendencies, even though he accepted its verdict. Read his full statement below...

Supreme Court Judgement, Part of our Democratic Challenges

It is said that the Supreme Court is not final because it is infallible, but that it is infallible because it is final. While I believe that only God is infallible everywhere, and only Nigerians are infallible in our democracy, I must accept that the judicial route I chose to take, as a democrat, has come to a conclusion.

Whether justice was done, is left to the Nigerian people to decide. As a democrat, I fought a good fight for the Nigerian people. I will keep on fighting for Nigeria and for democracy, and also for justice.

I thank all Nigerians who have stayed the course since the commencement of trial in the petition on the February 23 presidential election.

The judgement is part of democratic challenges we must face as a nation.

The Nigerian judiciary, just like every estate of our realm, has been sabotaged and undermined by an overreaching and dictatorial cabal, who have undone almost all the democratic progress the Peoples Democratic Party and its administrations nurtured for sixteen years, up until 2015.

Can Nigeria continue like this? Recently, former United States Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, averred that Nigeria had rolled back the democratic gains she made in 2015. When democracy is rolled back, the economy, the society and the judiciary will not be far behind. Today, the nail has been put on the coffin and the gains we collectively made since 1999 are evaporating, and a requiem is at hand.

In a democracy, you need a strong judiciary, a free press and an impartial electoral umpire. Nigeria has none of those three elements as at today.

One man, one woman, one youth, one vote, should be the only way to make gains in a democracy. And when that is thwarted, the clock starts to tick.

Two and a half millennia ago, Sophocles said “If we are to keep our democracy, there must be one commandment: “Thou shalt not ration justice.” Nigeria will do well to observe this warning.

To those who think they have broken my spirit, I am sorry to disappoint you. I am too focused on Nigeria to think about myself. I gave up that luxury twenty years ago. The question is not if I am broken. The question is if Nigeria is whole?

This is not a time for too many words. It will suffice for me to remind Nigeria of this – we are an independent nation and we are the architects of our fate. If we do not build a free Nigeria, we may end up destroying her, and God forbid that that should be the case.

I was a democrat, I am a democrat, and I will always continue to be a democrat. May God bless Nigeria.

Man beat fiancée to death at home after she confessed to cheating

A man bludgeoned his fiancée to death after finding out she was having an affair with a work colleague, a court heard.

Roderick Deakin-White, 38, is claimed to have murdered 35-year-old Amy Parsons, after the Australian secretary started seeing James Saunders, who worked with her at a City insurance firm.

Jurors heard the couple had been together for several years before Ms Parsons became unhappy with the Deakin-White's cross-dressing fetish.

After learning of Ms Parsons' affair with Mr Saunders, Deakin-White, who had admitted manslaughter, sent a flurry of angry messages to friends calling his love rival a 'bastard, creep, and bloody nobhead.'

He slammed the victim as a 'sneaky bitch' and a 'nasty, nasty person' in further texts before telling a friend he was going to do 'something stupid,' jurors heard.

Deakin-White allegedly decided 'if he couldn't have her no one can' after discovering love messages between Ms Parsons and Mr Saunders.

Ms Parsons was about to end their relationship when Deakin-White battered her to death in the shower, the court heard.

Police went to their upmarket apartment in Crowder Street, Whitechapel, and found Ms Parsons lying in a pool of her own blood in the bath inside the fifth-floor flat.

She was pronounced dead at the scene and a post-mortem exam revealed she had been struck several times with severe force.

The killer has admitted manslaughter but denies murder.

Deakin-White sat in the dock supported by his parents in the public gallery at Snaresbrook Crown Court.

Kenya Moore breaks silence on split from husband

Kenya Moore is setting the record straight about her surprising split from husband Marc Daly.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta star, who shares 1-year-old daughter Brooklyn Doris with Daly, opens up for the first time about the breakup exclusively in this week’s issue of PEOPLE — saying that the two haven’t filed for divorce yet and she’s hopeful they can find a way back together, but only if she and her estranged spouse can work through their issues.

“I didn’t get married to quit,” Moore says. “I love my husband. I don’t doubt that he loves me. Let me be clear, I took my vows seriously. I believe in for better and for worse and I believe in trying it all before you walk away, especially when we do have a child and we are a family.”

Unfortunately, she “doesn’t get the sense that [Daly] feels the same way.”

“I am hopeful, and have always wanted to work on our relationship. But I just don’t know if that’s even a possibility at this point, honestly,” Moore admits. “Marc doesn’t seem to be there. I’d feel more comfortable calling it quits if I knew I’d tried everything and it still didn’t work. And we definitely didn’t do everything we could have done to save our relationship.”

Back in September, Moore, 48, and Daly, 49, shocked fans when they announced in back-to-back statements exclusively to PEOPLE that they were going their separate ways after two years of marriage.

“Stop issuing drivers’ licence to drug addicts” – NURTW tells FRSC

National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has advised the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to stop issuing driver’s licence to drug addicts and motorists who consumed alcohol and other hard substances.

Alhaji Ahmadu Haruna, Chairman of the Union in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau, gave the advice on Wednesday at the launch of the 2019 Ember Months Campaign organised by the Bukuru Unit Command of FRSC in Barkin Ladi

According to Haruna, proper checks on the personality and lifestyle of drivers before issuing them with a driver’s license will go a long way in ensuring sanity on the highways.

He advised the corps to subject anybody coming to obtain a drivers license to thorough medical checks to ascertain their level of fitness to ply the highways with vehicles

“We want to call on FRSC to stop issuing driver’s license to drivers who consume alcohol and other hard drugs.

“These are the category of persons who don’t respect traffic rules and regulations; indulge in speeding, overloading and other forms of recklessness on the roads.

“We in NURTW don’t have the powers to arrest them or even stop them from driving, particularly that they have been licensed by the authority concerned.

“So, we are calling on FRSC to conduct proper checks before issuing a license to drivers,” he advised.
