Robert Mugabe To Relocate To Rural Home

Zimbabwe's ousted president Robert Mugabe is 'jovial' and looking forward to spending his retirement farming, it has been revealed.

The hardline politician's wife Grace is now concentrating on plans to build a university in his honour, his nephew Leo Mugabe said.

Zimbabwe announced plans in August to build the $1-billion post-graduate university in Mazowe, 20 miles outside Harare.

The plan drew fierce criticism as Mugabe is accused of brutal repression and bringing the country to economic ruin.

Leo said today: 'He is actually looking forward to his new life - farming and staying at the rural home. He has taken it well.'

Mother Confesses To Killing Five Babies

A French mother was charged Thursday with murdering five of her babies in a case solved by DNA evidence obtained years later after a brawl between neighbours.

Fourteen years after the bodies of four of the babies were found in a forest, Sylvie H, aged 53, has admitted to murdering five children, the public prosecutor in the eastern city of Mulhouse told a press conference.

The killings are believed to have taken place from 1993-1995 and 2003-2005. The body of a fifth baby was found at the suspect's home.

The mother, who has three other children aged 18, 27 and 32, revealed this week that she gave birth alone at home each time, without the father's knowledge.

Investigators had for years puzzled over who was behind the infants' deaths.

An autopsy showed at least two were strangled with cords.

But with no DNA evidence linking the babies to a parent, the case went cold until September 2016 when Sylvie H, her partner and her eldest son were involved in a fight with their neighbours.

Investigators looking into the dispute took DNA samples from the mother -- and to their surprise realised they had a match with the samples taken from the babies in 2003.

When officers arrived to arrest the woman at her home in a Mulhouse suburb on Tuesday "she understood immediately why they had come for her" and confessed to the killings, prosecutor Dominique Alzeari said.

The father of the children, who appeared "absolutely unaware" of the killings, was "very upset", Alzeari added.

The woman's motives remain unclear. She faces life imprisonment if convicted.

Machete-Wielding Man Hacks 3 Primary School Pupils To Death In Borno

Three children were killed and a teacher was injured when a man armed with a machete stormed a primary school in northeast Nigeria, two residents told AFP on Thursday.

The attack happened at about 9:30 am during break time at the Jafi Primary School in Kwaya Kusar, in the southwest of Borno state.

Kasimu Ibrahim, who lives near the school, said the attacker — described as being in his 30s and with a neat beard — headed to the nursery section of the school.

“He entered a class and began attacking pupils. He hacked two boys to death, aged about five and seven,” he told AFP by telephone.

A third victim — an eight-year-old girl — died on the way to a hospital in neighbouring Gombe state, he added.
The teacher managed to raise the alarm after she was struck in the hands and the attacker was overpowered.

Habibu Suleiman, who also lives nearby and like Ibrahim rushed to the scene when the alarm was raised, gave a similar account.

Both said police took the attacker into custody and then to a hospital, where he was under armed guard.

“Schools in the town have all closed, both public and private,” said Suleiman.

Kwaya Kusar is some 230 kilometres (150 miles) southwest of the Borno state capital, Maiduguri, which has been at the epicentre of Boko Haram’s Islamist insurgency.

Ibrahim and Suleiman both blamed the jihadists but while Boko Haram has targeted schools before, Thursday’s incident did not fit a pattern of previous attacks.

4 Ex-Kogi Commissioners Arrested And Detained

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) says it has arrested and detained four Commissioners in the administration of former Governor of Kogi State, Idris Wada, over alleged fraud.

Spokesman of the commission, Rasheedat Okoduwa, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.
Mrs. Okoduwa identified the ex-commissioners as Kayode Olowomoran (Culture and Tourism), Abdulrahman Wuya (Transport); Godwin Onama (Works) and Ali Ajuh (Budget and Planning).

She said the suspects’ arrest followed ICPC’s investigations into an alleged misapplication of a N2 billion SME loan they secured from the Central Bank of Nigeria on behalf of the state.

According to her, they acted in connivance with the former governor, his Accountant-General, Ibrahim Idakwo, and a former Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Commerce, Frank Onoja.

“Preliminary investigations by the Commission also revealed that the suspects allegedly partook in the mismanagement of another N8 billion bond that was raised to fund 57 projects across the state.

“The large sums of monies released for the projects were allegedly far beyond the levels of work done.

“Furthermore, the suspects are alleged to have benefited from illegal deductions to the tune of N1.3 billion made from the funds of 21 local government councils of the state by the same administration,” she said.

The ICPC spokesperson said the suspects would remain in custody until they fulfilled the administrative bail conditions granted them by the commission, while investigations continue.

WHO Confirms 10% Of Drugs In Developing Countries Are Substandard

An estimated 10 per cent of drugs circulating in low and middle-income countries is either substandard or falsified, a new research by the World Health Organisation says.

According to a press statement by WHO on the report, the substandard or falsified products are mostly anti-malaria drugs and antibiotics.

Apart from the drugs failing to treat or prevent diseases for which they are taken, they can also cause serious illness or even death.

The global health agency said it received report of over 15,000 substandard or falsified products since 2003. Of these, it said anti-malarias and antibiotics are the commonest with 42 per cent coming from the WHO African region and 21 per cent each from the WHO Americas and European regions.

54 Babies Born HIV Positive In Nasarawa

The Executive Director of Nasarawa State Aids Control Agency (NASACA), Zakari Umar, said 54 babies delivered between January and September in the state tested positive to HIV.

Mr. Umar made this known on Thursday in Lafia, the state capital in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said out of the 1,194 pregnant women who keyed into the Prevention of Mother- to- Child Transmission (PMTCT) HIV programme in 2017, 54 of them transmitted the virus to their babies.

Mr. Umar explained that cases of transmission recorded were due to lack of adherence to medical advice and refusal to take prescribed drugs.

“Science has proven that it is possible to totally eradicate mother to child transmission of HIV if pregnant women adhere to medical advice and take their drugs regularly,” he said.

“Those women whose babies tested positive must have refused to comply with their drug regimen during pregnancy.”

According to him, the case of mother to child transmission of HIV in the state has reduced over the years due to sensitisation and other preventive measures taken by stakeholders.

He said available records from 2016 indicated that 66 babies were born with HIV.

Another Kogi Civil Servant Commits Suicide

Barely one month after a top civil servant committed suicide in Kogi State allegedly over non-payment of salaries, another civil servant, a 47-year-old Abdullahi Uye Zhiya from Oguma in Bassa Local Government Area of the state has also taken his own life.

Zhiya was said to have terminated his own life due to frustrations he encountered as a result of non-payment of 12 months’ salaries owed him. He was said to have killed himself by drinking a liquid substance suspected to be poisonous chemical.

Zhiya, the chief store officer at the state Universal Basic Education, Oguma, who was said to have killed himself early this week did not leave a suicide note, but he was said to have complained bitterly to a friend over his inability to feed his family members.

A close family source told Sun correspondent that due to his economic distress caused by the non payment of his salaries, four of his children could no longer go to school while the deceased could no longer afford to buy drugs for his health challenge that has turned for the worst .

The source  who described the deceased as a hardworking man, said his situation became unbearable because those he was indebted to kept on taunting him and would not accept that he had not been paid, a situation they said made life more miserable to him.

At the beginning of his predicament, it was gathered, many  of his relations were reaching out to him to help in assisting his family members with foodstuffs, but all that were said not to be sufficient as he decided to end it all.

However, some of his relatives indicated that though the deceased was owed 12 months salaries it was not enough for him to end his life abruptly.

“Zhiya may not have taken his life because of his economic challenges ,there seemed to be other challenges which he refused to disclose,”  a family source hinted.

“We suspected that what happened has a spiritual undertone. The deceased at some point became withdrawn, but even when we asked he was never forthcoming but the frustration of staying for months without salaries contributed a lot” he added.

Meanwhile, the deceased has since been buried according to Islamic rites.

Selena and the Sorry musician recently decided to give their relationship another try, having ended their five-year on/off romance in 2015.

Britain Summons North Korean Ambassador Over Missile Test

The British Foreign Office said it had summoned the North Korean ambassador to condemn Wednesday’s ballistic missile test.

North Korea said it had successfully tested a new intercontinental ballistic missile in a “breakthrough” that put the U.S. mainland within range of its nuclear weapons.

“I summoned the North Korean Ambassador to the Foreign Office to make clear to him our condemnation of this latest ballistic missile test,” Minister for Asia and Pacific Mark Field said in a statement.

“North Korea claims it wants to bring security and prosperity to its people. But its actions are creating only insecurity and deepening its isolation,” said Field.

Britain is a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council.

The latest test was the highest and longest any North Korean missile had flown, and it landed in the sea near Japan.

Cultists Surrender Arms In Lagos State

Over 100 youths on Wednesday renounced their membership of various secret cult groups in Ikorodu area of Lagos.

The event which was witnessed by the state acting Police Commissioner, Imohimi Edgal, at Imota, was the second time this month suspected cultists came out publicly to embrace peace in Ikorodu district.

According to Edgal, their change of attitude was as a result of his community policing and neighbourhood partnership strategies, which were winning back the people’s trust.

Assuring that no criminal charges would be brought against them, the police chief noted that the youths voluntarily gave up arms and were desirous of reintegration.

He said: “The boys will be reintegrated into the society after being empowered with various skills. They had voluntarily renounced cultism and surrendered to the police.

“The importance of this denouncement is not for those doing it but for the society at large. What is significant is that the process for youths to show interest in denouncing cultism and taking up jobs, skills has started.

“I expect more youths to follow suit because this would mean that there are less arms in wrong hands and crime rate would drop.

“This is a clear and visible evidence that our community policing and community safety partnership is achieving result.”

Commending the traditional rulers for supporting the police to contain violent crimes in the district, Edgal appealed to the monarchs to prevail on their subjects to shun cultism and drug abuse.

Scarcity Looms As IPMAN Threatens Showdown With NNPC In Lagos

Independent petroleum marketers in Lagos State have threatened to withdraw their services from Dec. 11 over NNPC’s breach of bulk purchase agreement to sell fuel to them at N133.28k per litre.

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Lagos State Chapter, on Wednesday said it was set for a showdown with NNPC over irregular fuel supply at Ejigbo satellite depot.

The association said its members had been running their fuel stations at a loss in the last eight months due to NNPC’s default in the bulk purchase agreement it signed with IPMAN to sell fuel to its members at N133.28k per litre.

“”Now, a litre of petrol is being sold to IPMAN members by Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association (DAPMAN) at N141, apart from running costs, bank charges and other expenses,

“”This made it impossible for IPMAN members to sell a litre of fuel at the controlled price of N145, but N146 per litre,

““While the NNPC had refused to sell fuel to its members regularly, the corporation is diverting the supplies to DAPMAN at a price of N117 per litre.

““DAPMAN in turn is selling to IPMAN members at N141 per litre,’’ the association said in statement signed by its state Chairman, Alhaji Alanamu Balogun, Vice Chairman, Mr Gbenga Ilupeju and the Secretary, Mr Kunle Oyenuga.

IPMAN, therefore, called on President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Assembly, the Minister of Petroleum Resources, the Lagos State Governor and the security agencies to address the issue.

““If not, IPMAN members will withdraw their services and shut down all their stations in Lagos State.

““We have endured enough and are set for a showdown with NNPC for irregular supply at Ejigbo satellite depot, Lagos,” it said.

The association said its members were in business for profit, using bank loans and would rather stop sales of fuel than to run into bank debts or at a loss.

It noted that over 900 fuel stations were attached to Ejigbo satellite depot alone.
