Photo: Auto Part Dealer Vomits 94 Wraps Of Heroin

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency said a suspected drug trafficker apprehended at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos has vomited 94 wraps of heroin.

The suspect, 37-year-old Nnaemeka Chinedu, an auto parts dealer in Lagos, was arrested during the screening of passengers on a Rwanda Airline from Uganda.

Shortly after he was placed under observation, he vomited the narcotics weighing 1.59kg.

According to the spokesperson for the agency, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, this is one of the largest quantities of drugs ingested by a drug suspect arrested at the Lagos airport in recent times.

Chinedu said he was paid N450,000 for smuggling the drug.

“I was desperate. This is my first time of smuggling drugs. I have been selling auto parts in Lagos for the past 15 years but things have been very rough with me financially. I was paid in Uganda to smuggle the drugs,” Nnaemeka said.

Also arrested was a 57-year-old jewellery importer, Okonkwo Godwin, who hid 750 grammes of cocaine in his boxer shorts.

He was also arrested at the MMIA during the inward screening of passengers on a South African Airline flight from Brazil.

“The suspects are currently being interrogated for illegally importing narcotics into the country. Okonkwo Godwin was caught with one wrap of cocaine in his boxer shorts and another inside his bag all weighing 750 grammes,” NDLEA commander at the Lagos airport, Ahmadu Garba, said.

Godwin told narcotic investigators that he smuggled drugs because of his numerous financial problems.

“I am married with two children and I am in a terrible financial crisis. I used to import jewellery for sale at the Trade Fair Complex in Lagos and Onitsha main market. Things have changed so drastically that l even find it difficult to feed my family. This was what led me into drug trafficking. l was given two wraps of cocaine; one was hidden in my boxer shorts while the other was in my luggage. The agreement was for me to sell the drugs and share the proceeds with my partner in Brazil,” Okonkwo told investigators.

The NDLEA Chairman, Col. Muhammad Abdallah (retd.), said that the agency would continue to disappoint the plans of drug traffickers who wish to make money from drug trafficking.

“The NDLEA is working very hard to intercept drugs at all entry points and also arrest every trafficker. Those who intend to enrich themselves with proceeds of drugs will end up in detention. The arrest so far made validates our resolve to address the problem of drug trafficking in the country,” he said.

Anger As Another Queen’s College Pupil Dies

An epidemic that broke out at the Queen’s College, Lagos has claimed the life of its third victim, Saturday Punch can authoritatively report.

A Punch correspondent gathered that the victim, identified as Praise Sodipo, died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.

The Senior Secondary School one pupil, who was an orphan, was said to have been on life support at the Intensive Care Unit before she died late Thursday night.

The President of the school’s Old Girls’ Association, Dr. Frances Ajose, and the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, confirmed the development.

Punch correspondent had reported that many pupils of the school were admitted in the school’s sickbay after eating spaghetti and drinking water suspected to have been polluted, in the school.

Two pupils, Vivian Osuiniyi and Bithia Itulua –who were in Junior Secondary School two and three respectively, reportedly died as a result of the epidemic.

The Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, had led a team to the school and ordered an investigation into the incident, just as the then Principal of the school, Dr. Lami Amodu, denied the epidemic, blaming the report on haters of the school.

Amodu was later transferred from the school.

Idris, after few weeks, released a statement saying health records from the school’s sickbay indicated that the date of illness was January 16, 2017, and a total of 1,222 pupils presented themselves at the school’s clinic on account of abdominal pain, fever, vomiting and diarrhoea.

The statement noted that 16 cases of illness were admitted in various hospitals. While nine had been discharged, two had been confirmed dead, one was still on admission at the Intensive Care Unit of LASUTH, and three were at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba.

The Punch had also reported that more pupils of the school had taken ill and were being admitted in different hospitals in the state.

On Friday, one of those that had been in a critical condition gave up.

A parent, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “She was one of the first set of students that fell ill. She was an orphan. She went into a coma and was on life support, before she eventually passed on. That has made the death toll to be three now.”

Ajose said she was aware of the development but refused to comment further.

Idris said, “Yes, another pupil died. She was the one in critical condition. I received a call around 1am on Friday about the death. I don’t have much detail yet.”

A parent, whose child was discharged from the hospital on Thursday, asked the Federal Government to probe the deaths and called for the prosecution of the former principal of the school.

“This should not be swept under the carpet. There have been three deaths because of the carelessness of one person. We have lost these promising ones and their families are now in sorrow. This case must be probed and all those involved brought to book,” he said.

Syrian Migrant Sets Himself On FIRE

A Syrian migrant doused himself in a flammable liquid before setting himself on fire at a Greek refugee camp. A security guard is heard ordering "everybody go back please" while a young man wearing red trousers is seen in the corner holding a big plastic container.

The man dressed in uniform spots the younger man and tries to grab him. But flames engulf the young man, and he rolls around on the floor having turned into a human fireball.

He then tries to run off, completely covered by bright orange flames, and screams continue in the background. Reports say the migrant set himself alight as the officer tried to get hold of him.

The Syrian man was taken to hospital and reportedly suffered 90% burns to his body.

It remains unclear as to why he 'set himself on fire,' with some local reports saying he was rejected for asylum multiple times.

North Korean Despot Kim Jong-Un's Extravagant Taste In Imported Alcohol Revealed

North Korean despot Kim Jong-un has a new favourite tipple - imported US liquor. The high-living dictator, known for his love of French cheeses, fine wine and whiskey, blew £33,000 buying spirits from the US last year.

But it seems he does not mind a drop of the hard stuff brewed in the nation of his arch-enemy. Import data reveals that in the previous four years, officials in Pyongyang did not purchase any alcohol at all from the US, famous for Jim Beam and Jack Daniel’s.

But he spent tens of thousands last year. He also blew £127,000 on German booze, £107,000 on spirits from Denmark and £38,000 on alcoholic beverages from the Russian Federation. With millions of his subjects on the bread line, Kim’s Government imported £74,000 worth of German wines, £18,000 of Italian brands, with £10,000 spent on Spanish drinks.

Luxury beverages are reserved for Kim and his elite in the capital Pyongyang.

Another £48,000 went on premium German beers and £6,000 on ale from Denmark - home of Carlsberg.

Roly poly Kim, who developed a love of Emmental cheese while studying in Switzerland, appears to have now fallen in love with dairy products from Italy.

Figures from Trademap - a body which logs imports and exports across the globe - revealed that £48,000 was spent on cheese from the country.

Fine Brazilian coffee was another favourite with £715,000 in orders last year, as opposed to just £60,000 in 2015.

Meanwhile more than two million of his subjects are struggling to get decent food supplies, according to the UN.

Kim's bar bill includes:
•    £127,000 on German booze

•    £107,000 on spirits from Denmark

•    £38,000 on alcoholic beverages from the Russian Federation

And his 2016 round of drinks included:

•    £74,000 worth of German wines.

•    £18,000 of Italian brands (to go with the finest cheeses)

•    £10,000 on Spanish plonk

•    £48,000 on ‘premium beers’ from Germany

•    £6,000 on ale from Denmark, home of Carlsberg

•    £715,000 on Brazilian coffee (for the morning after).

I Order Phones Online, Send My Boys To Rob Delivery Man –Gang Boss Arrested By RRS

On March 7, 2017, members of a notorious gang, which specialise in robbing couriers of online trading stores, shot at an operative of the Rapid Response Squad, Sgt. Garba Kadiri, while attempting to evade arrest at Pretty Street, Iyana School, LASU – Iyana Road.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that through the reports of victims of the gang,  the RRS had tracked down the gang but they shot at the officers before they could be arrested. But on Wednesday, after days of tracking the suspects, operatives of the squad, apprehended four suspects.

The suspects, Wilfred Ehis (30); Bright Eloho (24), Emeka Egbemedu (22) and Olanrewaju Kamilu (33) were arrested at Olamulti Hotel, New Site, Iba, Ojo, Lagos. The leader of the gang, Ehis, claimed to be a Chemical Engineering graduate of University of Benin, Ekpoma, Edo State.

During his interrogation, he told the RRS, “I operate by placing orders online for expensive phones and goods. I request the sellers to make home delivery.

“I would give the seller an address where I know the robbery can be carried out successfully. When I have made the necessary arrangements, I would then call my boys to go to the delivery address and rob the delivery man.

“I didn’t follow them to the robbery scene. It is Nurudeen, alias ‘Onyeabo’ who oversaw the robberies. I know he has a locally made pistol. I am also aware he recruited other boys to join him in the robbery.”

“I always stayed behind in hotels. After the robbery, they sold off the phones and gave me my share of the deal.”

Saturday PUNCH learnt that Nurudeen is still in hiding.

Ehis said the suspect has gone underground since the operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad picked up one of his friends last year.

“He sneaks into Lagos mostly at night through the creeks from Ogun State,” he said.

The police believe Ehis has several separate gangs who handle his different operations.

He is also suspected of being involved internet fraud and ATM robbery.

The source added that, Ehis before his arrest stood at different ATM points in Igando, Ojo, Alaba and Apapa to monitor ATM users, who withdrew money. He then alerted his gangs, who usually used motorcycles to trail and rob their victims.

After his arrest, about five victims of the gang from the Computer Village in Ikeja, besieged the RRS headquarters at Alausa, Lagos to give information about how they were robbed.

Two of such victims who came forward on Thursday were Oluwaseyi Sunday and Alabede Habib.

Both of them in separate statement stated that Wilfred Ehis, who pretended to be “Barrister Deji”had sometime in February 2017 requested that expensive phones be delivered to him on two different addresses along the LASU– Iyana Iba Expressway.

The victims were later robbed by three of Ehis’s gang members operating on motorcycles at the delivery addresses

The sellers claimed they lost N800,000 and N450,000 to the robbery.

Items recovered from Ehis when he was arrested were mobile phones such as Tecno, LG 3, iPhone, two wristwatches, a Canon camera EO87D, necklace, Sony laptop, a wrap of Indian hemp and an ash-coloured Altima salon car.

Chinese Muslims Are Banned From Having Abnormal Beards Or Wearing Veils

China has announced that it is implementing new measures including a ban on 'abnormal' beards in its heavily Muslim region of Xinjiang.

Veils have also been banned in public places along with refusing to watch or listen to state media, as part of the new 'Regulations on Extremisation of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.' China claims that the legal, cultural and religious rights of Muslims in Xinjiang are fully protected.

However many Muslim Uighur people resent increasing restrictions on their culture and religion and complain they are denied economic opportunities amid an influx of Han Chinese into the province.

The new rules posted to news.ts.cn yesterday state: 'Parents should use good moral conduct to influence their children, educate them to revere science, persue culture, uphold ethnic unity and refuse and oppose extremism'.

Workers in public spaces such as stations and airports will be asked to 'dissuade' those who fully cover their bodies including veiling their faces from entering.

They will also be required to report them to the police.

The new rules is set to come into effect today, April 1.

I Dreamt I’d Become Rich By Raping Toddler –Man Who Defiled Seven-Month-Old Baby

At 55 years old, Magaji Dansale, found himself in police custody for no other reason than allegation of raping his seven-month-old step-daughter. But when he was brought before journalists by the Katsina State Police Command on Friday, the reason he gave for raping the toddler was shocking.

Dansale said he violated the baby girl because of his desperation to become rich in life. The petty trader told journalists at the police headquarters in Katsina where he and some other suspects were paraded, that he had several dreams in which he became rich once he had sexual intercourse with a toddler.

The father of six said in Hausa, “I had sexual intercourse with the baby girl because I saw it in several dreams I had that it was the way for me to become successful in life. I dreamt that all my suffering in life would end. This is why I did it.

“I truly believed that if I had sexual intercourse with her, all my predicaments would vanish. I would not have to run around to make ends meet anymore.”

Dansale said he married the mother of the baby girl following the death of his first wife who had six children for him.

He however kept mum when asked whether he was remorseful for his action.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Usman Abdullahi, said Dansale would be charged to court soon.

The child is still on admission at the Turai Umar Yar’Aadua Maternity and Children Hospital, Katsina, where she is receiving treatment.

She was admitted to hospital on Wednesday after a referral from General Hospital, Malumfashi, where doctors confirmed that she had suffered critical injury due to the rape.

The victim’s biological father, Ibrahim Nuhu, told journalists at the premises of the hospital in Katsina on Thursday that he had separated from the victim’s mother before she married Dansale. He explained that the incident occurred at Dangaski village in the Musawa Local Government Area of the state.

Ibrahim who also spoke in Hausa, said sometime last week, the baby’s mother approached him, complaining that the baby had pile which made her to bleed heavily through her private part and anus.

He said he then took the child to the General Hospital, Malumfashi where the doctors there insisted that the police must be involved as it was a rape case which had severely injured her and not piles as claimed by the mother.

The baby was consequently referred to the Turai Umar Yar’Adua Maternity and Children Hospital, Katsina, for further treatment while the police were called in.

The baby’s mother told journalists on Thursday, that sometime last week, she woke up from an unusual long sleep to find traces of blood and liquid in the baby’s private parts.

According to her, she assumed that the baby had piles. She added that the following day she made the observation, the suspect gave her some clothes to wash, among which was a trousers stained with blood and semen.

Dansale was subsequently arrested in connection with the incident.

Nine Persons Shot In Fresh Osun Communal Clash

No fewer than nine persons were reportedly shot and injured during a clash between the people of Asipa and Ipetumodu communities in Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State.

Our correspondent learnt on Friday that the fresh violence started on Wednesday during an Inter-house sports competition at Origbo Community High School, Ipetumodu.

It was however not clear what led to the fight between youths from the two communities, which was said to have snowballed into a communal clash in which guns and other weapons were reportedly used freely.

Our correspondent learnt that during the clash, some youths burnt down the popular Akinola Market, which they said was located on a piece of land belonging to Ipetumodu.

One of the leaders of Ipetumodu community, Chief Adedeji Asalu, alleged that the fight started when some youths from Asipa went to Origbo High School to stop them from holding the inter-house sports competition.

Asalu said, “ Asipa people went and disrupted the inter-house sports competition at Origbo Community High School. That was not all; they went to Akinola Market and set the place ablaze. They also pulled down part of our civic centre.

“They shot nine indigenes of Ipetumodu. Three of them were taken to a hospital for treatment.”

He identified some the victims as Dada, Sunday Eye, Niyi Bamgbofe , Apase , Musbau and Moshood, but added that none of them died.

Asalu further alleged that apart from setting the Akinola Market ablaze, Asipa youths went and shot at people at the market on Friday morning to scare traders away from the market.

Our correspondent also learnt that the Commissioner of Police in the state had invited representatives of the two warring communities to the police headquarters in Osogbo for a meeting.

A chief from Asipa community, Julius Ojerinde, described the allegations by Ipetumodu people against his community as fabrications.

He alleged that indigenes of Ipetumodu were angry because the White Paper on the 2015 crisis between the two communities favoured Asipa .

He accused Ipetumodu community of using the inter-house sports competition as an opportunity to attack youths from Asipa because of the content of the White Paper, which he said had become a subject of litigation.

Ojerinde said, “They have been telling lies from the beginning. They injured three of our youths with machetes and broken bottles during the inter-house sports competition. We will take the three victims to Osogbo later so that the police can see them.

“The divisional police officer was here when Ipetumodu youths took over the road to cause trouble again. Our people did not set any market ablaze.”

The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Afolabi Babawale, confirmed the clash between the two communities, but said normalcy had since been restored to the place.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs. Folashade Odoro, also said the situation had been brought under control.

She said no policeman was killed in the clash.

Odoro said, “We have brought the situation under control. We are at the market now and traders are there. It is not true that a policeman was killed.”

It will be recalled that the two communities had on January 13, 2015 engaged in a clash which resulted in massive destruction of properties.

Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, had set up a commission of inquiry to unravel the cause of the crisis in order to prevent a re-occurrence.

Herdsmen: Anambra Women Protest Nude

Some women and youths of Umuoba Anam in Anambra State  protested nude over the presence of herdsmen in their community.

They accused their traditional ruler, Igwe G.A. Ekwealor of complicity in bringing the herdsmen to the community. The protesters alleged that the presence of the herdsmen in their community had caused them untold hardship.

Leader of the women, Agnes Chiazo, said, “These herdsmen destroy our livelihood, our marriages as they rape some women who go to farm. Some of such women are being stigmatised in their different families. So, we are saying enough of this.

Our traditional ruler should stop harbouring them. He should stop bringing them to this community. We don’t know what he is gaining by harbouring those who would rape, kill and destroy the property of his subjects.”

Their ruler had, however, denied having any hand in bringing the herdsmen to the community.

He said the protesters committed sacrilege (by going nude during their protest) and would be compelled to appease the gods for defiling the land.

Speaking, the chairman of Anambra East Traditional Rulers’ Council, Igwe Alex Edozieuno, and traditional ruler of Mkpunabo Kingdom, Aguleri Otu, told journalists in Awka that when the matter was brought to the council’s attention, it absolved Ekwealor Ofany of any culpability in the case.

Edozieuno said in their meeting, which took place at traditional rulers’ secretariat at Otuocha, that it was necessary for the women to appease the gods in order to avert any form of calamity.

“The traditional rulers, after looking into the matter, resolved that the protesters should appease to the gods of Umuoba Anam within two weeks to avoid calamity visiting the community,” he stressed.

Edozieuno pointed out that elders of the community had condemned the protesters and passed judgment on them.
