Guard Hangs Self Over Debt At Ekiti Secretariat

A 49-year-old night guard with the Ekiti State Scholarship Board, Abolarin Olaoye, has hanged himself on the premises of the board inside the state secretariat complex in Ado-Ekiti.

The dangling body of the father of five and native of Igogo Ekiti in Moba Local Government area of the state was discovered on Wednesday morning when workers resumed for work at the state secretariat.

Workers in the various ministries, departments and agencies gathered in groups to discuss the incident as the lifeless body of the guard, who was also a commercial motorcyclist and farmer, dangled from the railings on the first floor of an office block for hours.


Men of the Nigeria Police and Department of State Services visited the scene. However, it took some time for the law enforcement agents to bring down the corpse as they talked about the need for the family members of the deceased to witness the recovery of his corpse.

A sister-in-law to the deceased and a confidant, Mrs Elizabeth Babalola, said Olaoye came to her at about 4.30pm on Tuesday complaining that he was tired of his financial situation.

Babalola said, “He came to me around 4.30pm on Tuesday and was lamenting that his rent was due and that he was finding it difficult to renew his tenancy due to irregular salary. He said he was also indebted to the government through the housing and car loans he obtained.

“He also complained of his inability to meet other financial commitments to his wife’s family. He told me that he could go ahead and do some nasty things. He added that he was tired of life.

“I did not realise that he meant something like this. I tried to persuade him not to resort to anything nasty. I told him that life was full of ups and downs and that he should just endure, but I never knew he would end up this way.”

The Executive Secretary of the State Scholarship Board, Mr Ayo Ajimat, who confirmed that the deceased was an employee of the board, described him as “a very prayerful, jovial and amiable person.”

“I don’t understand what led him to this. I don’t know the kind of problem he had that could lead to this,” Ajimat said.

Georgia Gets First Woman President...

Salome Zurabishvili has won Georgia's presidential election, becoming the first woman to hold the office.

With nearly all votes counted, the French-born ex-diplomat had 59% of the vote with rival Grigol Vashadze on 40%.

Ms Zurabishvili was backed by the ruling Georgian Dream party while Mr Vashadze was a united opposition candidate.

A new constitution is due to come into force, making the role of president largely ceremonial.


Ms Zurabishvili, 66, was born in Paris after her parents fled Georgia in 1921 following its annexation by Soviet forces.

She took up a career in the French foreign service and was posted to the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, as ambassador in 2003. She later gave up her post and the then-president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, appointed her foreign minister.

Mel B Claims She Wrote Her Tell-All Book Because Of Her Daughters

She's discussed her abusive ten-year relationship with ex husband Stephen Belafonte in her new book, Brutally Honest.

And Mel B, 43, told her fellow Spice Girl Emma Bunton she did it because she doesn't want her three daughters to end up in similar situations to her.

It's when a victim experiences the type of behaviour that stops short of serious physical violence, but amounts to extreme psychological and emotional abuse at the hands of a partner.

Host Jamie Theakston said: 'In the book you said “in the past 20 years of my life I have made £80m. Now I was thinking hang on, Is that what the Spice Girls make because it’s my birthday coming up and I might ask Emma for something different?"'

Mel laughed: 'I was married for 10 years and most of my work is in America and Australia so you know aside from my lovely Spice Girls, I am quite an independent money earner and I love earning money.

'And that’s also a form of control, also for your partner because they put you out to work so you can’t think straight.

'But luckily I love what I do and I love my work and that’s why I’m so happy – you know people like Simon Cowell – even though the girls didn’t quite realise it also – they were very much my rock in the midst of all of this. But they didn’t know the truth truth because I was embarrassed.'

Ex-Eagles Player, Etuhu To Stand Trial Today At A Swedish Court For Match-Fixing

Former Premier League player Dickson Etuhu goes on trial in a Swedish court on Thursday to face a charge of match-fixing, which he denies.

Etuhu played at the 2010 World Cup for Nigeria and had a lengthy career in England for Manchester City, Preston North End, Norwich, Sunderland, Fulham and Blackburn Rovers before moving to play in Sweden.

He is charged with trying to bribe a goalkeeper to fix the result of a league match between his former side, Stockholm's AIK, and IFK Gothenburg.

The game was due to be played on May 18, 2017 but was postponed after goalkeeper Kenny Stamatopoulos told AIK he had been approached by Etuhu and another man with a view to fixing the game, according to the 473-page pre-trial protocol seen by Reuters.


Etuhu has said his former team-mate must have misunderstood the conversation.

'I respect everyone's opinion, but the facts remain the same — it never happened... It's unbelievable that an ordinary conversation with a friend can lead to something like this,' Etuhu told Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter.

The offence of gross bribery carries a maximum sentence of six years in prison.

Etuhu, 36, and his lawyer Johan Akermark both declined to speak with reporters head of the trial, being held at the Stockholm District Court.

NMA Explains Why Nigerian Doctors Are Leaving Nigeria Enmasse

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has attributed poor remuneration and inadequate health facilities as some of the major reasons for mass exodus of medical doctors.

Dr Ekpe Phillips, the FCT Chapter NMA Chairman, said this at the opening of the Annual Health Week of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) on Wednesday in Abuja.

Phillips described the pay package of doctors in Nigeria as poor, stressing the need for government to increase the remuneration of doctors to address the challenge.

He noted that many doctors who left the country to take up foreign appointment did so due to inadequate facilities among other factors.


He listed mass unemployment, lack of placement for residency faced by a high proportion of medical professionals in Nigeria as other factors.

Phillips said Nigeria is losing doctors to foreign countries, adding that Nigerian doctors are leaving the country for greener pastures and the workload is becoming too much on the doctors that stay.

“We hear doctors collapsing because the workload is too much because their colleagues have left to find a greener gesture.

“We have internal and international brain drain; Nigeria now has one doctor catering for 5,000 patients instead of one doctor to 600 patients.

“Brain drain is now becoming pandemic and sad news because government did not and still is not doing enough; there is no serious commitment to stemming this syndrome.

“Nigeria which was one of the richest 50 countries in the early 70s has retrogressed to become one of the 25 poorest countries in the World today,’’ he said.

Buhari Vows War Against Insurgency & Terrorism Must Be Won

President Muhammadu Buhari today in Maiduguri vowed that the war against insurgency and terrorism must be won.

The president, therefore, encouraged troops on the frontline not to be distracted by challenges but remain focused and committed to the task of eliminating the terrorists from “surface of the earth’’.

Buhari spoke when he declared open the Chief of Army Conference with the theme: “Optimising the operational efficiency of the Nigerian army towards safeguarding democracy and national security in Nigeria.’’

He expressed satisfaction that the army was doing well, in spite of some setbacks in the war against insurgency and terrorism in the North East.


“We are aware that in the recent months and in recent days, there have been some operational lapses in the northern part of Borno, particularly at Jili, Arege and Metele.

“I know that you are doing your best to reverse this trend and I want to assure you that no effort will be spared in providing you the necessary support you require to complete your task.

“We remain committed to ending the crisis in the North East and making the entire area safe for all.

“I urge you to keep up the good work. I am also painfully aware that some gallant officers and soldiers have paid the supreme price in the course of this anti-terrorism operation,’’ the president said.

He noted that since 2015, when he assumed office, the security situation in the North East had improved and commended the armed forces, especially the Nigerian army for their selfless sacrifices.

Two Siblings Behead 10-Year Old Boy For Ritual In Ibeju-Lekki [They Are Pictured]

The Police in Lagos State have arrested two siblings for beheading a 10-year old boy for ritual in Ibeju-Lekki area of the State.

A statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Chike Oti on Wednesday said a team of anti-kidnapping personnel from the police command on 27 November, 2018 at about 2030hrs, on routine patrol between Ajah/Epe expressway, apprehended two brothers namely Ayodeji Obadimeji, aged 18 years and Saheed Obadimeji, aged 19 years of Tunde Balogun Street, Shapati, Ibeju-Lekki in possession of fresh human head.

“On interrogation, they confessed that one Sodiq Abefe contracted them to provide him with human head at the cost of N200, 000, hence they lured the victim by sending him to buy Coca-Cola drink for them and when he brought the drinks to them, they held him and cut of his head with a knife
.

“The victim has been identified by his parents as Joseph Makinde, male, aged 10 years,” he said.

Oti said the torso had been recovered from an uncompleted building located at Shapati and that effort was being made to arrest the said Sodiq Abefe who allegedly contracted the duo to commit the heinous crime.

He said the Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi had directed that the case be handed over to the Homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba for further investigation.

Oti said the CP reiterated his earlier warnings to criminals to repent or relocate from the state or regret the consequence of their action.

Zamfara SUBEB Boss, Jengebe Jailed 41 Years

A five-man panel of the Court of Appeal sitting in Sokoto and presided over by Justice Hannatu Sankey has sentenced the Chairman of the Zamfara State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Murtala Adamu Jengebe to a cumulative jail term of 41 years.

Jengebe was convicted by the court after the appellate court found him guilty on the seven out of the 10 counts for which he was earlier acquitted at the Federal High Court, Gusau, Zamfara State.

In the lead judgment of the Court read by Justice Habeeb Abiru, the earlier acquittal of the embattled Chairman by a Federal High Court in Gusau was set aside.


The appelate court held that the prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt seven out of the ten counts of the money laundering charge brought against him by the EFCC.

He was consequently sentenced to five years imprisonment on each of four of the counts and seven years each on three other counts respectively.

However, the Court ordered that the sentences shall run concurrently.

Former IG Ehindero, CP Arraigned For Fraud

The Independent Corruption Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on Wednesday re-arraigned a former Inspector-General of Police, Sunday Ehindero, and a former Commissioner of Police, John Obaniyi, over alleged N16.4 million fraud.

The accused were again arraigned on a 10-count amended charge before an FCT High Court sitting at Apo.

The charge borders on conspiracy, fraud and making false statement.

The former police chiefs, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.


The prosecutor, Mr O.G. Iwuagwu, told the court that the accused committed the offences from May 2006 to November 2006.

He said that the duo conspired and used their positions to place N500 million in two fixed deposit accounts.

Iwuagwu said that the money was part of N557,995,065.00 donated by the Bayelsa Government to the Nigeria Police for purchase of arms and ammunition.

The prosecutor said that the N500 million placed in fixed deposits yielded an interest of N16, 412, 315.06.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the alleged offences contravene Sections 26(1) and 22(5) of the ICPC Act, 2000.

Counsel to the accused, Messrs Kenneth Onorun and Samuel Obairko, prayed the court to uphold the bail granted to them when they were first arraigned.

They objected to the prosecutor’s application for the court to proceed with evidence by a prosecution witness who, the prosecutor said, was ready to testify.

The defence counsel submitted that the statements of the accused were not served along with the amended charge.

Justice Sylvanus Orji directed the prosecutor to serve the defence counsel with the statements.

He adjourned the case until Jan. 8 for hearing.
