The Gambian parliament on Wednesday extended the tenure of embattled President, Yahya Jammeh, by 90 days, according to the BBC.

The news comes a day after Jammeh declared a state of emergency in the country, amid mounting pressure on him by ECOWAS and world leaders to hand over power to President-elect, Adama Barrow.

Efforts by an ECOWAS mediation team led by President Muhammadu Buhari to resolve the leadership crisis in the country has so far failed to achieve the desired result.

But the regional body has warned Jammeh that he would not be allowed to cling to power and from January 19, the day Barrow is meant to be sworn in, he would stop being recognised as the President of the country.

Nigerian soldiers are expected to arrive at an ECOWAS base in Senegal today as the regional body prepares to use military to force Jammeh out of power.
