Nguyen Thanh Trung, 32, was reportedly on a training exercise in England when the collision occurred at 1,000 ft over the historic estate Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire.
The Vietnamese Ministry of Defence confirmed his death in a statement last night which said he was taking part in an advanced flight instructor training session in an Cabri -G2 helicopter.
Also in the helicopter was Captain Mike Green, an experienced flight instructor for Helicopter Services with an Army background, who was described by as "absolute gentlemen" by those that knew him.
The statement from the 18th Army, Ministry of Defence confirmed the 32-year-old pilot was on an advanced flight instructor training session when the incident occurred. It is not known whether he or Mr Green were at the controls.
It explained that contact with the helicopter was lost after 15 minutes and that authorities from both countries were continuing to investigate what happened.
