Scared shoppers ran into buildings as shop owners locked their doors as the man hit out at strangers.
Walking barefoot and without any clothes the man punched a woman in the face as she pushed a baby in a pram.
He had already been filmed attacking a man and then returned to high-kick him in the back. The footage was recorded on the afternoon of Thursday, December 28 on Croydon High Street.
A woman who worked in one of the shops, but asked not to be named, told the Croydon Guardian it was a "very scary moment".
She said: "We had to lock the door because it was a bit scary.
"When he saw us locking the door he started to behave very badly."
A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police say they were originally called to reports of a naked man running around in Clarence Road, Croydon shortly before 11am.
She said: "He then entered the property of someone he knew, became aggressive and refused to leave.
"He was then reported to have possibly gone onto the roof of a property.
"Officers and a police helicopter attended but could not locate the man.
"Due to the man's behaviour, he was treated as a high risk missing person and enquiries continued to locate him."
The man was then spotted three hours later on Croydon High Street, as police were called to reports of a man assaulting people.
The police spokesman added: "He was also reported to have assaulted a man in High Street before stealing his jacket.
"Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended and a 42-year-old man was detained under the Mental Health Act in Katharine Street and was taken to a south London hospital.
"While at the hospital, the man bit a police officer on the hand.
He was then taken to a mental health facility for assessment.
