Three Children Dead After School Walkway Collapses

Three children have been killed and others reportedly still trapped after a walkway collapsed at a high school in South Africa.

Another 15 pupils are said to have been injured and four airlifted to hospital after the disaster at Vanderbijlpark near Johannesburg.

A teacher told local website News 24 that the walkway collapsed as children at Hoërskool Driehoek returned to class after assembly on Friday morning.

Pictures from the scene show the remains of the walkway collapsed on the ground with rescue teams on their way.


A spokesperson for Netcare, an emergency services provider, said: "Multiple people have sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate, at least five people are in a critical condition."

Panyaza Lesufi, the head of education for the Guateng Province gave details of the incident shortly after the collapse took place.

He wrote: "Moments ago a walkway collapsed at Höerskool Driehoek, Sedibeng Region.

"Sadly three (3) learners died on the scene and scores are still trapped in the rubble. I am on my way to the scene."
