Man arrested for smuggling cannabis into Abuja prison

The Katsina State Police Command has arrested 70 suspected kidnappers and recovered a cache of arms made up of AK-47 rifles, two light assault rifles, two English pistols, seven locally-made pistols, three pump action rifles and 19 Dane guns.

Other items recovered from the suspects were 1,500 pieces of 7.62mm ammunition, 200 cartridges, two axes, four knives, 45 motorcycles, five motor vehicles, one tricycle, 25 jerry cans loaded with petrol and five bags of assorted food items.

The spokesman for the command, SP Gambo Isah, gave the details while parading the suspects at the command headquarters in Katsina on Tuesday.

According to him, the arrests were made possible by officers of the command in collaboration with sister security agencies during sting operations under the auspices of the Operation Puff Adder.


Isah explained that some of the suspects were involved in kidnapping for ransom as well as other criminal activities.

“A total of 70 kidnap suspects were arrested during the period under review,” he said.

The state Commissioner of Police, Sanusi Buba, had on Monday, revealed the identities of the suspects involved in the abduction of Governor Aminu Masari’s mother-in-law in March this year.

Buba had said, “It is worthy to mention that among other successes recorded was the smashing of a notorious kidnap syndicate that kidnapped 80-year-old Hajia Hauwa Yusuf of the Kofar-Kaura layout, Katsina, who is the mother-in-law of Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari, on March 8, 2019.

“Those arrested are Abdullahi Sani, alias Kubi, 23, of Sokoto Rima Quarter, Katsina; and Abubakar Dani, alias Dan-bose, 25, of Sabuwar Unguwa Quarter, Katsina.

“Others are Rabe Hamza, alias Tankabaje, 30, of Nasarawa-Bugaje, Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State; and Marwana Gide, 25, of Yar-Maiwa village, Batsari Local Government Area of Katsina State.

“The last suspect, Abdulhakim Bishir, alias Danruma, 22, of Sabuwar Unguwa Quarter, Katsina, who had been on the run ever since, was arrested by the police on Tuesday, May 14, 2019, in Kano State.  The suspects confessed to the crime and are assisting the police in their investigation.”
