The Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers had threatened to go on strike if the state government fails to pay teachers’ outstanding welfare allowances and improve their condition of service.

The teachers, in a letter dated November 23, 2020, and signed by the state chairman of the NUT, Pius Okhueleigbe; and Secretary, Mike Moni Itua, threatened to go on strike should government fail to meet their demands.

In the letter addressed to Governor Godwin Obaseki, the teachers noted that pending issues of teachers’ welfare and condition of service  discussed and agreed  with the governor on July 17, 2020 had yet to be addressed.

They said their union planned to meet with the governor on December 3 or December 4.

The union’s seven-point  demands include  payment of 2013 to 2015 promotion arrears of “primary schoolteachers in Oredo, Orhionmwon and Uhunwonde local government areas.”
