Umahi made the announcement at a Town Hall meeting at the Oruta Ngele Stadium in Abakaliki, the state capital. He asked local councils in the state to suspend all revenue collection in their areas.
The market women leader, Mrs. Akoji Agnes, had complained that fraudsters and illegal revenue collectors were over tasking them. The governor directed that no levy or tax should be collected from women selling vegetables and other perishable commodities in the open market.
Umahi stressed that those who have stalls or shops should pay only the consolidated revenue, as agreed by both the state government and leaders of various markets. On the acceptable revenue to pay, the governor directed his deputy, Kelechi Igwe, to set up a committee to meet with market women, traders, council chairman, traditional rulers and other stakeholders.
