Student dies after falling from 10th floor of hostel while trying to take selfie

An overseas student has died after falling 90ft while trying to capture the perfect night time backdrop for a selfie.

Viktoria Grinkevich had been studying in Lithuania and staying in a student hostel before her tragic death.

Friends said the 19-year-old from Belarus had stepped on a stool then climbed onto the handrail on the balcony on the 10th floor of the accommodation in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.

She lost her balance and fell, witnesses told police.


They added that she had wanted to take a selfie against the background of the night sky over the city.

An ambulance arrived quickly at the scene, where paramedics sought to save her for over half an hour.

Viktoria was a second year student majoring in media and communications studies at the European Humanitarian University in Vilnius.

A statement by the university said: "Students, teachers and all member of the community are shocked with this tragedy.

“We send our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Viktoria.

“Vilnius police is investigating the circumstances of the tragedy.”

The Belarus Foreign Ministry confirmed her tragic death.

“The Belarus embassy is in touch with the law enforcement agencies of Lithuania,” spokesman Anatoly Glaz said.
