Doctors remove live 6-inch worm from Chinese woman’s brain

Chinese doctors removed a live six-inch worm (parasite) from a 23-year-old Chinese female patient who was complaining of having continuous headaches.

Xiao Yi (pseudonym) was reported to have visited a local clinic in Jiangsu province of eastern China in January but was transferred to a provincial hospital in Nanjing after she suffered an epilepsy attack.

Doctors recommended brain surgery when she tested positive for being infected with parasites.

To the surprise of the Chinese doctors, the parasite was more than 10 centimetres, white and live, like a noodle.

Footage posted on PearVideo showed the parasite wiggling in a bowl after it was removed from her brain.

“During the operation, we found a creeping, long bug that was over 10 centimetres. It was white and live, like a noodle,” said Dr Dai Wei, a chief medic from the Gulou Hospital of Nanjing University.

“It was still moving around when we took it out completely,’ Dai stated.

Doctors suggested that such brain infection was a result of the consumption of unhygienic food, such as raw or half-cooked wild animal meat.

According to Dr Dai, “[The worms] normally come from raw meat, mostly seafood, which contains a lot of parasites,”

“Sometimes the worms get into a person’s brain through the blood and develop there.”

The patient who was reported to be a food lover admitted to the doctors that she once devoured a dish of frogs on a trip two years ago.

“Maybe because she was travelling, the restaurant [she visited] might be unhygienic or they might cook the food with unsanitary standards,” Dr Dai explained.

Xiao Yi was reported to be gradually recuperating after the operation.

Trump says China 'will do anything' for him to lose election

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he believes China's handling of the coronavirus is proof that Beijing "will do anything they can" to make him lose his re-election bid in November.

In an interview with Reuters in the Oval Office, Trump said he was looking at different options in terms of consequences for China over the virus.

"I can do a lot," he said.

The US president is starting to come under pressure as the US death toll soars above 60,000 and millions are left unemployed after the economic shutdown.

Trump, accused of not acting early enough to stop the spread of the virus, has been heaping blame on China for a global pandemic and said he believed China should have been more active in letting the world know about the coronavirus much sooner.

Asked whether he was considering the use of tariffs or even debt write-offs for China, Trump would not offer specifics.

"There are many things I can do," he said. "We're looking for what happened."

"China will do anything they can to have me lose this race," said Trump.

He said he believes Beijing wants his Democratic opponent, Joe Biden, to win the race to ease the pressure Trump has placed on China over trade and other issues.

Trump also said South Korea has agreed to pay the United States more money for a defense cooperation agreement but would not be drawn out on how much.

China has also been criticised by UK and France for a perceived lack of transparency at the start of the outbreak.

There is also scepticism over the country's death toll, which at about 4,600 is vastly lower than those in European countries and the US.

Some Chinese coronavirus ventilators 'could kill patients' if used in UK, doctors warn

Some Chinese coronavirus ventilators ‘could kill patients’ if used in the UK, several senior British doctors have warned.

According to a letter seen by NBC News, doctors have warned about 250 ventilators that the UK bought from China.

The doctors reportedly warned that the machines were intended for use on ambulances and not in hospitals, and had several issues including a problematic oxygen supply, an unfamiliar design, and couldn’t be cleaned properly.

According to NBC News, the letter said: “We believe that if used, significant patient harm, including death, is likely.

“We look forward to the withdrawal and replacement of these ventilators with devices better able to provide intensive care ventilation for our patients."

The letter was written by several senior doctors, including an intensive care doctor at the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, according to NBC News.

While it remains unclear who saw the letter, the Department of Health and Social Care confirmed to NBC News that it was aware of the concerns raised in the letter.

Thankfully, the department confirmed that none of the ventilators are currently in use in the UK.

A statement to NBS News said: "We are leading a coordinated effort to rapidly increase ventilator capacity and ensure these vital pieces of equipment are delivered to the frontline.

"Patient safety is our absolute priority and new orders are all dependent on machines passing robust regulatory tests to ensure they are up to standard."

Ventilators are used to take over the body's breathing process in coronavirus patients whose lungs are failing.

Michael Gove said the NHS now has more than 8,000 ventilators and the government aims to increase capacity.

Facebook to allow artists charge fans to access their live streams during this pandemic

Due to the global pandemic, many artistes’ shows have either been postponed to new dates or indefinitely. But fortunately, their inability to tour is gaining a new way for them to make money during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Facebook has announced it’s adding an option that will let creators charge viewers to watch live streams on the platform.

“To support creators and small businesses, we plan to add the ability for Pages to charge for access to events with Live videos on Facebook – anything from online performances to classes to professional conferences,” Facebook said via its Newsroom.

With this new option, artistes could stage virtual concerts with ticket prices. It may also present a way for the “Verzuz battles”, which have become extremely popular on Instagram Live, to become a money-making enterprise for the participants.

With these battles having viewership numbers upwards of 500,000 people, and artists like Tory Lanez bringing in more than 300,000 people to his “Quarantine Radio” livestreams, there is a real potential to earn a substantial revenue. Even if artists are able to convert a small percentage of those viewers to pay for their Facebook livestreams, it could result in a solid profit.

The upcoming feature is one of the multiple changes the social media platform is making in light of the global pandemic. Facebook is bringing back Live With, which allows users to livestream with another person. The company is making it possible to add a donate button to live videos too, aiding users in raising money for nonprofit organizations.

However, Facebook hasn’t announced when exactly users will be able to start charging for livestreams. It also hasn’t revealed how much of a revenue share it will be receiving once the feature is introduced.

TV anchor caught with half-n.a.k.e.d woman during live broadcast - and it's not his girlfriend

The Spanish TV host, Alfonso Merlos has been accused of cheating after a half-n.a.k.e.d woman walked into shot during one of his at-home news broadcasts – a woman who was not his girlfriend.

Merlos, 41, was presenting a report on the Estado de Alarma channel from his home when a woman, appearing to only be wearing a bra, walked through the room, in view of the camera.

Eagle-eyed viewers noted that the woman was not Merlos’s girlfriend, Big Brother star Marta López, but 27-year-old journalist Alexia Rivas.

Oh, the scandal…

As the extremely awkward on many levels moment went viral, Merlos stayed quiet for days on the cheating accusations.

However, he later broke his silence on The Ana Rose Show, apologising to López but claiming that they had broken up when Rivas was seen in his apartment.

The journalist said: ‘If you think that my attitude has not been correct or that there are things that I have not done well, I have no problem asking for forgiveness, although my goal was not to harm someone else.’

Rivas also insisted that Merlos was single when she started dating him a few weeks ago, telling Socialité: ‘I didn’t get into a relationship, he told me he was single. We have been [seeing each other] three weeks.’

Merlos can be seen to have a liked a number of Rivas’s selfies on Instagram from mid-April.

But as always with these things, the plot thickens – and it’s giving us major Ross and Rachel ‘we were on a break’ vibes.

López has argued that she had not broken up with Merlos, and that they were apart for four days after having an argument.

The viral news broadcast allegedly happened during these four days, and López called the incident ‘unpleasant’ and ‘shameful’.

Kylie Jenner wants company to drop the STORMI name saying her daughter is the famous one

Kylie Jenner is in court with a company over trademark.

Kylie filed new legal documents going after a company called Business Moves Consulting -- which filed to trademark "Stormi Couture" a month after Kylie and Travis Scott welcomed their baby, Stormi Webster, into the world.

Kylie applied for her own trademarks for Stormi -- including one for "StormiWorld" -- but got hit with a lawsuit from Business Moves because it claimed people would be confused by their similarities ... and it registered its "Stormi Couture" trademark first.

Jenner is on the counterattack now though and asking the trademark office to cancel BMC's "Stormi Couture" trademark, claiming the company was fraudulent in its application and only got the trademark to capitalize on her daughter's name.

Kylie says Stormi has "achieved fame in her own right," and points out that her "StormiWorld" birthday parties have been covered by major media outlets like Vogue. She also says Stormi's cosmetic line has already become hugely popular.

As Kylie's team states in the document, "The Stormi name is well known, and uniquely and unmistakably is associated with Stormi Webster."

Kylie also says BMC has a history of this sort of trademark behavior involving other celebrities -- including DJ Khaled. He sued the company over their "Asahd Couture" trademark back in 2018, believing they were ripping off his son's name for their benefit.

Biden under pressure to address s.e.x.u.a.l assault allegation

US presidential hopeful Joe Biden said Wednesday he has a proud history of campaigning against s.e.x.u.a.l violence, as he faces mounting pressure to respond to an assault allegation made by a former aide.

The presumptive Democratic nominee has been accused by Tara Reade of assaulting her in 1993, when she was a 29-year-old staff assistant in the office of Biden, then a US senator from Delaware.

Biden’s campaign has denied the claims, but he himself has not responded directly to the allegations by Reade, now 56.

However he touted his record of supporting abuse victims when asked a question about military prosecutions for felonies including r.a.p.e at a virtual town hall late Wednesday.

“As you know, I wrote and championed the Violence Against Women Act, transformed how this country gets justice and support to survivors and led the ‘It’s On Us’ campaign to fight s.e.x.u.a.l assault on campuses.

As VP, I fought to provide a special victims counsel for sexual assault cases in the military,” the 77-year-old said.

‘Superhuman!!! Meet the 101-year-old woman who beats coronavirus after surviving cancer, Spanish flu pandemic

A New York woman who survived the Spanish influenza pandemic, cancer and sepsis, has beaten coronavirus at the age of 101.

Angelina Friedman’s family say they weren’t surprised when she overcame Covid-19 as she is a ‘survivor’ who has ‘superhuman DNA’.

The pensioner’s mother died giving birth to her on a passenger ship that was taking immigrants from Italy to New York City during the second wave of the Spanish flu in 1918.

One of 11 children, she was taken care of by two of her sisters and they eventually reunited with their father in Brooklyn, where she was raised.

She went on to marry and start a family with a man named Harold Friedman, but tragedy struck when they were both diagnosed with cancer.

Angelina’s husband sadly died, but she survived the illness and is now also the last of her siblings.

Her daughter Joanne Merola told Pix11: ‘My mother is a survivor. She survived miscarriages, internal bleeding and cancer.’

She added: ‘Everybody in the family lived until at least 95, except one uncle. My mother is a survivor. She is not human. She has superhuman DNA.’

The New Yorker, who now lives at the North Westchester Restorative Therapy and nursing Center in Lake Mohegan, was taken to hospital on March 21 for a minor medical procedure.

However, the procedure was cancelled when she tested positive for coronavirus, which has now taken 27,000 lives in the city.

Angelina returned to her nursing home to isolate and had an on-and-off fever for several weeks, but finally tested negative on April 20.

Merola hasn’t been able to visit her mum since February and says she is nearly deaf so they can’t talk on the phone.

But, regardless of the distance between them, she says she ‘marvels’ at her mother’s endurance.

She said: ‘If my mother could see this, I’d say, “Keep going, Ma. You’re going to outlive us all”.’

Angelina’s story comes after Keith Watson, 101, became one of the UK’s oldest people to survive Covid-19.

Barbara Briley, 86, who ‘survived Hitler, open-heart surgery, two replacement knees and two replacement hips’ also proved she is a fighter once again by beating coronavirus in March.

Meghan Markle told friends "changes would have been made" if Kate Middleton were bullied by tabloids

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry recently moved to Los Angeles after stepping away from senior royal duties and leaving England, where there's no denying that Meghan went through it.

According to the Daily Mail, Meghan told friends that she believed if her sister-in-law Kate Middleton been similarly targeted by British tabloids, the royals would have stepped in.

"[Meghan said] no one would have put up with it, and the broken and outdated system would have been revised. Those outlets responsible for their vicious attacks would have been shut out," a friend told the Daily Mail, adding that the Duchess believes "changes would have been made."
This all gets a little messy because, ironically, the Daily Mail is one of the outlets that Meghan and Harry have announced they're having "no corroboration and zero engagement" with.

An alleged friend of Meghan Markle's claims the Duchess of Sussex said British tabloids would have been shut down if Kate Middleton were being bullied.

The source claims Harry "constantly" approached his family about Meghan's treatment and they didn't listen.

But, according to their source Harry "constantly" approached Prince Charles and the Queen about Meghan being bullied by the press, and they "wouldn't do anything to change the protocol."

Apparently, "[Meghan] said it was infuriating that Harry's very real and valid concerns fell on deaf ears."

"Meghan said they made it seem like this is the way it is, deal with it. Harry had been dealing with it far too long," the source added. "She said he wasn't going to let this destroy her life and their marriage."

The source also claims that "Meghan said Harry made it crystal clear that they could not function in good faith under the current system... and that if it wasn't revised and updated to their liking, they would have no other choice than to break from the royal family. She said no one took his pleas seriously, so they had to take the issue into their own hands. This was about protecting the family and doing right by Princess Diana.

She said the British tabloids have haunted Harry since childhood and should have been kicked out of the media pool long ago. The system is broken and Harry wanted to fix it. She said he needed to take a stand and now they are doing it together."

False belief that methanol cures virus has killed over 700 in Iran

The false belief that toxic methanol cures the coronavirus has seen over 700 people killed in Iran, an official said Monday.

That represents a higher death toll than previously released by the Iranian Health Ministry.

An adviser to the ministry, Hossein Hassanian, said that the difference in death tallies is because some alcohol poisoning victims died outside of hospitals.

“Some 200 people died outside of hospitals,” Hassanian told The Associated Press.

Alcohol poisoning has skyrocketed by 10 times over, in Iran in the past year, according to a government report released earlier in April, amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The national coroner’s authority said that alcohol poisoning killed 728 Iranians between February 20 and April 7. Last year there were only 66 deaths from alcohol poisoning, according to the report.

Separately, the Iranian health ministry spokesman, Kianoush Jahanpour said that 525 people have died from swallowing toxic methanol alcohol since February 20, state TV reported on Monday.

Jahanpour said that a total of 5,011 people had been poisoned from methanol alcohol.

He added that some 90 people have lost their eyesight or are suffering eye damage from the alcohol poisoning.

Hassanian also said the final tally of people who lost their eyesight could be much higher.

Iran is facing the worst coronavirus outbreak in the Middle East, with 5,806 deaths and more than 91,000 confirmed case.

Methanol cannot be smelled or tasted in drinks. It causes delayed organ and brain damage. Symptoms include chest pain, nausea, hyperventilation, blindness and even coma.

In Iran, the government mandates that manufacturers of toxic methanol add an artificial color to their products so the public can tell it apart from ethanol, the kind of alcohol that can be used in cleaning wounds. Ethanol is found in alcoholic beverages, though its production is illegal in Iran.

Some bootleggers in Iran use methanol, adding a splash of bleach to mask the added color before selling it as drinkable. Methanol also can contaminate traditionally fermented alcohol.

The consumption of alcohol is generally prohibited in Iran. However, minority Christians, Jews and Zoroastrians can drink alcoholic beverages in private.

Following the coronavirus outbreak, Iran’s government announced it would issue permission for new alcohol factories quickly.

Iran has currently some 40 alcohol factories that have been allocated for pharmaceutical and sanitizing items.

Already before the outbreak, the Iranian economy was struggling under severe US sanctions blocking the sale of its crude oil abroad.

I joined robbery gang because members were always sharing money — Suspect

One of the two suspected members of a six-man robbery gang has said he joined the gang because he always saw them sharing money after each operation.

They had been parading as members of One Million Boys gang in Lagos, but were arrested by policemen attached to Ejigbo Division of the Lagos State Police Command.

The suspects had earlier written to residents, informing them of their visit and also threatened to cut off victims’ wrists if they did not get what they wanted.

However, luck ran against the duo of Sunday Oladepo, 21, and Adeola Adekoya, 18, as they were apprehended along Daleko/Ejigbo Road, Monday night, by policemen who got wind of the gang’s invasion.

Other members of the gang escaped.

At the time of arrest, the suspects were said to have rubbed black substance on their bodies to enable easy access into victims’ apartments through burglary proofs, and powder on their faces for disguise.

During preliminary investigation, it was discovered that members of the gang, resided at Kazeem and Apeno communities in Ejigbo.

During interrogation, one of the suspects, Adeola, said when they heard the police siren blaring that night, members of his robbery gang took to their heels.

He said he was unfortunate to have run into the midst of residents, who were keeping watch of their environment and was subsequently handed over to the Police team.

Asked why he joined the gang, the 18-year-old suspect said: “I always see them counting and sharing money, whenever they returned from operation.

“I thought I could make money too and had to join them. Segun introduced me to the gang and he taught me how to use cutlass on victims. The powder we rubbed on our faces was for disguise so that no one will recognise us. But I was arrested at my first operation.”

The suspects, however, denied being members of the One Million Boys gang, saying they were just members of a street gang.

They gave identities of other members as Sherif, Papa, Peter and Segun. They were transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, SCIID, on Tuesday.

How President Buhari’s ''speech'' for Monday's broadcast leaked on social media before his address

The Presidency has disclosed that someone obtained and leaked the draft of President Muhammadu Buhari’s speech hours before the national broadcast on Monday.

This was disclosed by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, when he appeared on TVC News.

The leaked version of the president’s speech was full of errors and was already circulating on social media before the actual broadcast to the nation at 8pm.

Adesina was asked to clear the confusion on the lockdown where some newspapers reported different dates, and he said, “There is just one authentic copy of the broadcast, which is the one released from the media office.

“But then, I recognise that a couple of hours before the broadcast itself, a copy of the purported speech had been circulating particularly on WhatsApp. If you compare the two, yes there are some similarities but then, there are also wide differences.

“You have just mentioned the effective day particularly of the gradual easing of the lockdown. What happened was that somebody got hold of the initial draft of the broadcast and played hanky panky with it by releasing it through the social media.

“If you know the processes that a broadcast goes through before it gets recorded – the script will originate from the relevant government agency, department, parastatal of ministry, whoever heads that agency, ministry or parastatal sign up on it and then they sent it to the presidential office.

“When it gets to the presidential office, it gets through a number of hands again, because the president’s thoughts must be infused and injected into that draft.

“There are some things that may be in it that the president may completely not agree with.

“Finally, it comes to the media office, and I sign on it, which I also did yesterday before the broadcast was recorded – I signed on the final copy before the broadcast was recorded.

“So some hours before the recording was played back, I saw something circulating on social media, I knew that that was not the copy that I signed off on. Then we began to investigate. It has been found out that the original script from inception was what somebody laid hands-on and released to the social media.

“Well, mainstream media knows how we release our statements – whatever documents that we are releasing. They should know how to authenticate it. It comes from the media office.

“So, if any mainstream media is now taking its information from the social media, that mainstream media is to be blamed because we duly released the authentic copy of that broadcast by 8:06 PM. So the mainstream media should not have depended on a leaked copy which turns out to have many discrepancies compared with the original and final copy.”

Germany grants Nigeria N8.9bn debt relief due to Coronavirus outbreak

The Republic of Germany said it had granted Nigeria debt relief amounting to N8.9bn (€22.4m) on account of the coronavirus pandemic.

Also, the German government said it had successfully campaigned for the G20, the Paris Club and creditor countries in favour of a debt moratorium for nations heavily affected by the economic impact of COVID-19.

The European economic powerhouse stated this in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday, while announcing the provision of additional €5.5m (N2.2bn) to the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund managed by the United Nations to continue life-saving aid in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.

It said the fund was for the drilling of wells, construction of sanitation facilities, rehabilitation of buildings or construction of shelters for internally displaced persons and other victims of insecurity in the North-East.

“This brings Germany ́s contribution to the NHF to a total of more than €29m since it became operational in May 2017, making Germany a major donor to the NHF over the past three years,” the German mission said in the statement.

It noted, “In 2020, the German treasury relieves Nigeria of debt repayments amounting to € 22.4m (N8.9bn). This comes in addition to Germany’s support to the COVID-19 response on a global level and the support provided by the European Union to partner countries in Africa worth €3.25bn (N1.3tn).

“On April 27, Germany pledged € 300m (N120bn) to the global humanitarian response plan launched by the United Nations to fight COVID-19.”

Germany also said it had pledged a total of €12m (N4.8bn) in support of the West Africa Health Organisation, the regional health institution of ECOWAS.

The new allocation, Berlin said, was earmarked for the purchase of vital medical supplies and laboratory equipment, training measures and more generally, cooperation in pandemic prevention at the national and regional levels.

“Clearly, the current crisis goes beyond national and even continental borders and can only be fought effectively in a cooperative way. We need more international cooperation, not less,” German Foreign Minister, Heiko Maas, stated.

The statement further said the procurement of protective materials and hygiene articles such as hand disinfectant, protective clothing, surface disinfectant, KN95 face masks, contactless clinical thermometers and gloves valued at €20,000 (N8m) for the Nigeria Police Force had started through Germany ́s implementing agency, GIZ.

It noted that the materials would be handed over shortly in Abuja.

Germany explained that it had supported the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control with the introduction of a Surveillance Outbreak Response Management and Analysis System which, as of August 2019, was implemented in 200 local government areas.
